My own Colt 1911 Gold Cup National Match came with two magazines. One magazine holds 7 rounds of 45 ACP ammo, and the second one holds 8 rounds of 45 ACP ammo. Their respective capacity is engraved on the bottom and except for that, they are otherwise identical and of the same exact size, which begs the question: why does Colt suppply or sell a pistol with two different magazines? Why not two identical 8 round magazines? Just wiondering!!!

That's odd. Never heard of that one. Does that gun always come with a 7 and 8 round mag? Or is it just yours to the best of your knowledge? Maybe the person who puts the mags in the case grabbed one out of the wrong bin. ?

Ruger was doing that with the SR 1911 pistols. One 7 rounder & one 8 rounder.

No idea but here is my theory:

The original 1911 was designed for a 7 round mag. Hence 1 - 7 round for the purist.
Most people like the extra round so give them an 8 rounder as well.

Probably started with one manufacturer and the others copied. Not sure how much of a cost difference there is between a 7 and an 8 in manufacturing but I am guessing there are a few pennies to be saved one way or the other and the big manufacturers love to save a penny here and a penny there.
