Hi guys,

I've just bought a nice looking 1911 in 45 acp from Ellwood Epps with a feature that I haven't seen before.
It's a Colt Mark IV serie 80 with counter weight in front of the trigger. Do any of you have any experience with that kind of frame? I was in need of a new 1911 to play with / tune and this one was pretty interesting.

Here are some pictures. I now hope I'll be able to have it soon!

Looks like somebody's competition gun, with the ported slide extension and weight forward on the frame. It would have been a lot flatter-shooting that a stock 1911.

If it were a modern IPSC open gun there'd be an optic too, so it's not that.

It is a common unit called a Compensator used by IPSC & Action Shooters . Used back in the day. Maybe now too I guess?
I have 2-3 like it from my IPSC days in the '80's. Made by many gunsmiths & companies all over the place.

Thanks for the replies. I have seen many compensator barrels like this, but never any frame or counter weight in front of the trigger guard. Do you know if the frame was machined that way or if it's some kind of an accessory? It does look like it was machined that way.

When they first were used in IPSC, and SOF, IIRC, people called them "pin guns" (as in bowling pins).

Do some research on who was making 1911 frames back in the 80's. Any names anywhere? Atleast several companies were making custom frames for competition.
