Hey everyone!

I recently acquired an original Colt 1911 Government. I took it out to the range for the first time today to see how she works and ran into a bit of a surprise. I loaded 5 rounds into the mag (which I don't believe is the original mag), loaded the mag into the gun, pulled the slide back and let it go to chamber the first round. Well the minute I let go, the round loaded and blew off! First time that's ever happened to me and it woke me up really fast! After that, I shot off the rest of the 4 rounds and had feeding issues. I'm guessing the feeding issues are because of the mag, but what would set it off when chambering the first round? The next 5 rounds did the exact same thing. After that, I let go of the slide gently for the next two sets of rounds and it didn't accidentally go off on the first round. Any thoughts/input would be appreciated!

Thanks!

How old is the 1911? Did the gun chamber the next Rd and not fire? Probably trigger sear worn Grip safety.,Was your finger out side the trigger guard when you racked a RD?/ Make sure the gun is not loaded #### the action hammer to the rear and pull the trigger not depressing the grip safety to see if it fires, also rack the slide with no mag in the gun to see if it fires.

I would look at the Sear Spring first, it may be need adjusted.

Try to determine if the gun is all original or has been worked over sometime in it's past. A trigger job with too little engagement could be to blame. Try to determine if the hammer is falling. The Firing Pin Spring may be too weak.

The 1911 is from 1915. The gun did chamber the next round and it did fire correctly. The issue seems to be only when chambering the first round. I tried racking the slide back and forth without my hand on the safety and it wouldn't fire (as it should). When the safety is set, everything works accordingly.

Sorry to say that but I don't think you will be able to avoid going to a gunsmith but I would nonetheless detail strip the thing and completely clean it before retesting.

Anyway, congrats for your Colt, tunning, modding and troubleshooting is half the fun with a 1911 so enjoy your journey!

Its the disconecter located in front of the hammer on the frame, no big deal find a smith to replace it. But if your gun is 1915 maybe a collector piece and should not be fired.

(4) Disconnector test.
(a) With the pistol unloaded, #### the hammer. Push the slide group 1/4 inch to the rear (fig. 23) and hold in that position while squeezing trigger. Let slide group go forward, maintaining pressure on trigger. If the hammer falls, the disconnector is worn and must be replaced.

Google it there is loads of info on function test for the 1911,its a old gun probably needs a tune up,but as I said before could be a collector gun and worth a few bucks hows the finish on this 1911 has it been redone?/ These old guns some times worth more as collector than a shooter
