Hi Fellers,

I saw a Colt "post ban sporter" for sale locally today, not sure yet of the price...Is there something I should be wary of here?

I understand that these rifles have a non-removable carry handle, and that they use different, "post ban" assembly pins - making them less reconfigurable than the usual AR; but is this all?

It's a 20" rifle. I ike the looks and feel of it and the price may end up being attractive ...(perhaps around $1000) I just don't know enough yet about AR's to know whether it's on to stay away from or not...

Thanks for any help you can offer - Jeff/1911.

post ban is a US term when the Assault Weapons Ban was in place. In Canada all AR of all types are restricted. "Post Ban" is a meaningless term in Canada

Looks like this?

Some "collectors" make a big deal about vintage and the "slab side". I just shoot mine and enjoy it very much. Its got all the right stuff.....C MP 1-7 twist heavy barrel, MP carrier / bolt assembly, bayonet lug (makes it a pre ban), metal butt plate with trap door / cleaning kit, etc.

I paid $800 for mine. Bought it off a buddy and that's what he paid for it new in 86'

I had a chance to buy one and asked the same opinion. The only thing that put me off was the small pin/big pin thing. Some of the pins on Colts were oversized compared to most other AR's. This is the pin that fastens the upper to the lower receiver.

If you're not planning to swap uppers and lowers it's not a problem. Even if you do, you can get bushings to make them fit.
Personally I like the fixed carry handle. I use mostly iron sights and they feel more solid to me. You can put optics on fixed handles, but I found it hard to zero in because it's so high on the rifle.
If I could afford two AR's I would buy one of these Colts.

Postban rifles will have non-threaded barrels or pinned on muzzle brakes (no flashiders), and no bayo lug.

Thanks to all - These sound like differences that won't make any negative difference to me...I like the fixed carry handle too, actually. I just figured I perhaps shouldn't "limit myself" too much... But who am I kidding? Once I get into AR's I'll jump in with both feet, like everything else I've gotten into. This can just be my first, standard-style AR. :)

Best wishes, Jeff/1911.

Nothing wrong with that rifle, and it is easily converted to a flattop if needed as Daniel Defence make a large front pivot upper, they are very well made rifles.

Thanks Sparrow! :)

This is really the only thing I might wish to do (conversion to flat top style)...for easier mounting of a scope.

Best wishes, Jeff/1911.
