Colt Double Eagle 45

I shot one years ago when they came out, they were Colts first attempt at a DA 1911 if I recall.

I dont remember much about shooting it, but the gun was discontinued fairly quickly and I dont remember anyone ever having anything good to say about the gun.

Good Luck with yours, I hope you enjoy it.

I bought one two years ago, and I generally like it.
Favourable points:
Good solid all stainless steel construction.

Good DA trigger pull for an autoloader; way better than the Colt 2000 I had, and better than my S&W 4506 DA trigger.

Shoots to my point of aim with OEM sights, and good groups.

It is an eye catcher, and a conversation piece.

What I find lacking in my example:
OEM Shooting Star magazine follower is a POS, get rid of it and install a good sturdy follower, and you will have no hold open problems.

My example is a hard baller only, even though the throat seems nicely shaped, it dosen't care for semi-wads or hollow points.

Overall, it has permanent residency in my collection.

Any one have one or any opinions about them. I just picked one up and waiting for the paper work to get it to the range.

Ah! So you're the other guy in Canada with a Double Eagle!

I bought mine back in '94 or '95. I needed a couple of sacrificial lambs in 2001 so I sold it to my buddy. Two years later he wanted to get a new Para so he sold the Double Eagle - I bought it back! Was I a sucker twice? Absolutely not.

I found the DE to be very accurate out of the box. I was shooting 230 gr. LRN or FMJ with 231 powder and I could nail tin cans constantly at 15-20 m. So could my buddy.

Two warnings - it is not meant for stubby fingers in double action mode, and it does not like semi-wadcutter ammo but it feeds military ball (lead too) like a cannibal after Rosie O'Donnel.

I still have it and still shoot it and I don't think I'll be selling it again.

Double Eagle...

A Colt double action single stack 1911 style pistol....

An ingenious solution to an non-existent problem, as they say... :p

Those who have them seem to like them [generally]. I'm a died-in-the wool Colt fan and have handled several 'double eagles'. Never have been impressed enough to buy one, though. :(

I'll stick to my traditional single action 1911's, thanks... ;)
