Hi folks, I have a few questions about the Huntsman.

I recently purchased a surplus Colt Huntsman and was wondering if these run okay with CCI mini mags? It appears the date of manufacture is either 1975 or 1976. I am also curious if I can replace the rear sight with an adjustable one at some point, would the Woodsman sight work?

Lastly, has anyone tried refinishing the grips on one of these?

If it doesn't run with MiniMags, there's something wrong with it!

I have yet to find a 22 autoloader (rifle or handgun) that didn't work well with at least one of the minimag options.

Can't help with the other questions, sorry.

Some of the oldest ones apparently could not handle high velocity. I did some research and it should be okay with it.

Typically older 22 pistols - Series 1 Woodsman, early High Standards can develop cracks if used with HV ammo, later models should be fine.

I did more research and apparently the first series that ran tell the late 40s had both a model that would handle standard velocity and another model that would handle high velocity. By the second series they should all handle high velocity. Since mine is from the 1970s and considered the third series, it should be okay, unless someone can offer a reason why I should not.

Like cost?

The gun dates from a time where the usual ammo would have been a mix of subsonic (CCI Standard Velocity or similar from other brands) and the now very common HV ammo that shoots at around 1250 fps. So there's no really need to run the gun on Mini Mags unless that is the only ammo you have. Mini Mag was a few bucks more the last time I saw some on the shelves.

Plus you might find that the gun is a touch more accurate with Standard Velocity subsonic ammo. Not by enough to matter for casual plinking. But if you're able to get small tidy groups with HV ammo then SV ammo might shrink the group by enough to notice.
