Colt MK IV Series 70 not ejecting - help please

I have a new to me Colt Mk IV Series 70 Gold Cup ... has had work done to it by previous owner(s) ... I knew that when I bought it so it's my problem now ...

I just can not get thru a mag without at least one but often 2 or 3 failure to ejects where the spent shell appears to not be pulled all the way out of the barrel ... so when the new bullet attempts to feed it jets jammed up. The only way to release it is to pull the slide back, drop the mag and cycle the slide ... the spent shell pulls out fine at that point ... shoot and often repeat ... very annoying.

A couple of other things that may help diagnose ... on the last round often the shell remains completely in the chamber ... also cases that are ejected successfully go in random directions, up, sideways or back, a couple even bounced off my forehead.

Today I tried some other mags from my Sig Target and S&W 1911 to remove potential mag issues and while the problem seemed to occur less frequently it did still occur at least once per mag.

I'm thinking I need the ejector replaced? or what else could it be?

Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

Two things that come to mind would be:

- Check the extractor hook and see if it is rounded over/worn or debris built up on it.
- If extractor looks fine, the extractor tension probably needs adjusting ie remove extractor from slide, add more bend to it, reinstall and retry.

The simple way...

The more technical way...

Awesome, thanks for this ... I did the test and it does indeed look like the the tension was too little, I have increased it and we will see how it goes tomorrow

Here is a pic of the extractor ... to me it looks ok but to others?

Thanks again, these vids really helped.

All the pictures you posted and none of the extractor lol. +1 on the extractor tension. It's an easy fix.

Edit ok so the extractor looks worn out no?

I kind of thought that too but looking at the one listed on Midway USA which is apparently one of Colt's parts distributors it looks blunted on the tip as well ...

I've seen worse extractors but also better. The hook on that one is a little worn, IMO.

You can probably get basic function back with proper tensioning; your extractor is slipping off the rim of cases and insufficient tension is one issue with that symptom.

But personally I would drop in a Wilson BP extractor, and tension that instead. They're fairly cheap and one will last you for the rest of your gun's life.

At any rate a quick bend of that one should give some indication if you're on the right track.

Thanks, where is the best place to order a Wilson BP extractor?

Yes, it's your Extractor. Can't really tell from the photo (because it's in profile) if it's wear or just a tension issue but it doesn't look like it was fitted correctly.
Any type of Extractor you choose will have to be fitted to the gun but if you want the best extractor available, get an aftec. There's a reason why they are the most popular Extractor in high round count competition circles. They last.

No probs.Glad it could be a zero-cost simple fix. Old extractor looks like there's typical wear but looks good to me for a lot more rounds. If you do buy a replacement, as someone mentioned, it wouldn't hurt to buy a new recoil spring at the same time.

Keep the total under $100US and shipping will be around $11.US. Mind you, not too long ago, I dropped $300.US at Brownells and they only charged me $11. as well. Keep it under $100.CDN and there's a good chance that you'll get away from paying taxes and CanPost handling fees.

BIG Thanks to all ...

Hey, I just want to say thanks to everyone that helped out here ... especially Trinimon who got me off on the right foot ...

Last night you all spurred me to do some extra research and not only did I learn a lot but I believe my problem is now solved ... after a couple of tweaks to the extractor tension adjustment today I was able to fire off 15 full mags without one incident ... also from the shape and configuration of my extractor I believe I have a Wilson ... the previous owner did tell me there were a lot of aftermarket parts on the gun.

Anyways, thanks again ... and Happy New Year to you all.
