I have an option to buy one of three Colt Python variations.#1 is the royal blue 8 inch barrel,#2 is the High polish stainless 6 inch barrel, and #3 is the 6 inch blued version. What version will hold it's value best, and which one seems to be most sought after?

From the criteria you've asked #2 would be my choice, that is if they are all in perfect condition. Again I prefer the non BBQ guns but the Bright Stainless Pythons are the ones who bring a premium right now. I think it will always do, Colt put more man hours manufacturing them because of the polishing phase, they are scarce compared to the Royal Blued ones. My choice would be a 6" matte stainless though. Also the 6" tube will be more sought after now and in the future than the 8" even though the 8" is less common. JMHO

I love my 6" blued Python and I wouldn't buy an 8" unless that was all that was available. I believe the Stainless version is a bit rarer and therefore might hold its value more but it looks more like a pimp gun than the blued.

If you can't make up your mind, buy both 6" guns.

I like or prefer to keep anything stainless to a minimum in my gun cabnet, but that's just me and my personal preference. As such, my order of choices from the three you've defined would be;
  • #3, especially an early production model.
  • #1, One 'dressed up' in Colt Royal Blue was the first Python I had and foolishly sold.
  • #2.
My present, early production Python

Sure if #3 is a pre-'65 made Python (Serial under 50499 w/o any prefix) I would jump on it if it's in good shape. It will be worth more now and in the future than any other Pythons regardless of finish or barrel lenght.

Not the Stainless.

While the other posters are right when they claim that the stainless version has less production, that in itself does not make them more valuable. Colt only made stainless because it was a trend, a fad if you will. Colt is just like any other company. They make what the consumer wants.
Similarly, S&W made many more stainless 686's than 586's but stainless steel does not in itself make it more valuable.
Sure its easier to clean but I would take issue with the so called "extra effort" put into polishing the stainless Python. Colt Royal Blue is a legendary finish, "the legendary blue finish." Colt Royal blue tops stainless anytime.
About a half a million Pythons were made. The very last one made was on display at the SHOT SHOW and I saw it. Think it was stainless? Nope. Blue.
Okay, bottom line is: Buy the 6" blue one. It is the most sought after. It would be a crime to cut down the 8" one, so that one is last. Stainless is 2nd.
BTW, Colt never made any Diamondbacks in stainless.

Have never owned or even touched one, but given the choice I'd go 6" blued. I DO like stainless finishes, particularly on revolvers, but not high polish....I'm more a fan of brushed. Totally aesthetic opinions here.

OP,at $1000 per Python, buy all three! You will easily sell them for more than that if you choose to
The classic Python remains the 6 inch blued and would be my first choice. The stainless does tend to command higher prices, especially in the "ultimate" finish(ie highly polished),itys very pretty, but tends to scratch quite easily.Ive never been really keen on pythons with 8 inch barrels, they just dont look right, but I still wouldnt turn one down.
There are many other factors that determine a pythons value, condition, age(generally the older the better, stainlessvs blue vs nickle etc)
Pythons are really fantastic guns and seem to be getting harder to come by,people hang on to them I guess,so if you have a chance to get one(or three!),go for it!

By all three, a better investment you could never equall in RRSP's! But if it were myself, the blued 6"er would be my first with the Stainless 2nd and the 8"er third. good luck whatyever you do you will come away with a tack driver! Dale Z!
