so I bought a trooper and I have some questions Google can't seem to answer

the serial number is 26###U
according to colt dates it to 1960.

what does the U indicate?

I think it's an mk3 which started production in 1969?
I do know how to tell the trooper from mk3 apart but I do not have the gun in hand

also the finish is the electroless nickel which I don't believe was avail until late 70's early 80's?

I don't really care about collector value as I shoot everything I buy BUT- if it's something crazy rare or something I have no problem passing it on to someone who just likes to look and I can shoot something else.
no real idea of value either one that looked a bit better then mine for sale on a USA auction site for 1950$

this is not my gun only for reference but it looks exactly the same

what the hell did I buy lol?

thanks in advance for any help ps the pic is of An mk3 according from the web page I borrowed it from

Pre-1969 Troopers have the shiny nickel finish as an option. Not the matt finish of your gun. The underlug first appeared on the Mk III. Apparently the Trooper and Mk IIIs have no interchangeable parts so I'm likely wrong about the re-barrelling.
Maybe give Colt a call?

once I have it in hand it may answer more questions I also just read the barrel threads are different, I'm almost sure it's An mk3 but I can't get past the low serial number.

I've never looked up serial numbers as I don't shoot collectibles.
Just a thought...
When you looked up the serial number, did you type in Trooper or Trooper MkIII?
Maybe the serial numbers reset ( hence the U) with the MkIII so you have an early Mk.III?
Maybe the U stands for Underlug?
I'm reaching here!

the colt site did not accept the u in the serial number at all, you can't enter the model just the digits it says it's not comprehensive list and it just says 1960 trooper, I have also seen an "L" in the serial number of the mk3 guns, gonna call the colt 1-800 number tomorrow

thanks, I doubt I'll be that lucky I only bought it because I had never seen one with that finish I really know nothing about colt revolvers, coolness factor sold me on it

Very nice Trooper MK III you have there. Your revolver was manufactured in 1981 (serial 00001U - 31289U), one year before Colt discontinued the Trooper MK III in 1982. Finish is electroless nickel or "Colt Guard" introduced in 1968. I would put value on such a revolver in the $900+ range if mint in factory box with papers.

I came across a Colt 6" DiamondBack in 38 special at the Antique knife & gun show at the Las Vegas Riveria a few years ago. The seller claimed it was stainless steel revolver. While Colt made all kinds of experimental and one-of-a-kind guns, Colt DiamondBacks never made it to stainless steel production. This DiamondBack had the "ColtGuard" finish.
Just like the Trooper MKIII, this DiamondBack started out as a carbon steel revolver......

I'm no marksman but not bad considering I don't own any revolvers and it was the first time shooting it. also had it looked at by local gun smith to get a value and 2 hours and multiple phone calls later .... I'm happy ;)

However....expect to see it soon on the ee as I think I will continue the quest for a Python

To bad , I just sold a python, and would have taken that as part trade, the last one I sold was a 8 inch.BTW, try a few 357 mag, sometimes they will really shot,
also different loads of 38 sp will shoot better than others, 2.9 gr 231 win is what my last colt liked
