I am looking at getting a new bull barrel with comp added to my gold cup. First I am finding it hard just to get a bull barrel from any Canadian dealer can any one point me the way. Second how much fitting is need or are they just a drop in?

No they are not just drop in, you have to fit them. It is not too hard to do but if you have never done it get a pistol smith to fit the barrel.

If you get one with a fully supported chamber you will have to get the frame milled in the ramp area to fit it. I believe most of the bull barrels currently available come with fully supported chambers. The new barrel will most likely need to be fit to the muzzle opening in the slide as well.

A bull barrel fits just like any other barrel, just has no barrel bushing.

Really?

If it is a stock gun you will need a reverse plug, a different guide rod and new barrel and comp. Now, depending what make and design these parts will be, your slide will require some reaming and/or shortening. Also the barrel must be fitted to the slide and compensator blended with the slide.

Gold Cup is a gun with its personality and soul. By doing this both will be destroyed. Wouldn't you consider building a new top for this gun? This will cost you a little bit but you will have two guns in one.

I agree 100% with this. Further to this if the barrel was a fully supported model that the frame would require modification I would do the build on another gun right from the get go and keep the Gold Cup stock.

I put a 6 inch Briley fully supported barrel with a Briley spherical bushing in my Series 70 1911, threaded the end and built a comp for it. The only downside to this is it darn near takes 3 hands to disassemble the top end because the bushing is captive on the barrel. I am very happy with the spherical bushing.

Yes, you are right. I just looked into Brownells catalog and they do not have any unsupported bull barrels for compensated guns. So milling of the frame of this Gold Cup beauty will be necessary. This is a butchery and it is a no no.:(

After much reading I am now looking for a used top end and just build it up not to kill the gun I have now. I thought this route would be a stright drop in.

Guess I was wrong!!!

Yay! No need to cut up a perfectly good Gold Cup.
