Very cool. I have a couple one of a kind items myself and would never part with them. Congrats and cherish it.
 
That is not the actual serial number. If you remove the grips, there is the actual Colt serial number. The military had Colt mark the number shown most probably to quickly tell to whom the particular pistol was assigned to. Here is is my much older version with number 625:

Sorry, I think you are confused. My revolver is a Colt USMC Model 1905 Revolver. The serial number range on these pistols is from 001 to 812. They only made 812 of them.

You have the more common Colt 1892 revolver, and your pistol has the last three stamped on the small parts. My pistol is matched by the complete serial number, as it consists of only three digits. There is no serial number under the grips as you suggest.
