Colts Combat Commander issues

I'm hoping someone can help me out.

I've got a colt combat commander that is binding up when I pull the slide back

It will fire but will cycle the slide forward.

This pistol came from a collector who converted it from 38super to 45,

It has a full length weighted guide rod, and a recoil spring that has had a few loops removed and has had a bubba'd closed loop end.

The only thing that I know of that is not a genuine colt part is the full length guide rod and the recoild spring itself.

I've attached some pics so please let me know what you think my problem(s) could be.

Cheers

Phil

Put the slide back on without the recoil spring and guide rod and see if the slide still binds. It looks like you could use a new recoil spring.

I'm interested to see if you get your problem figured out. My dad has a combat comander that is having what sounds like the exact same issue.

As noted, try cycling the slide with no spring/guide, take a good look at the barrel lugs, hood and legs, look for rounded edges, bumps and bruises, that'll tell you if there are other issues, then get a factory strength 45 spring, spring plug and GI guide rod. That slide incidentally, does not go with that frame - Colt to my knowledge, only does 2 tones the other way (blued slide, Stainless or Satin Nickel frame) and rarely if ever in a Commander.

Yes. Again this one was built using colt parts but I don't think it was ever fitted properly. It moves fine with the recoil spring removed and the guide rod in place. But when I use a new 45 spring it still binds up. I will replace the guide rod and see what happens.

I would replace the recoil spring.

I tried a full length guide rod in my 9mm Combat Commander a few years back, ABSOLUTELY nothing but trouble, get rid of it! I did

I have the original config cap recoil spring and small guide and using it still causes a bind. I'm going to take it to a local 1911 guru and see what we can do.
