Just got my hunting licence and will be hunting (first time ever) Blacktails this fall on the Island. The only rifle I have is a Savage 110 in 7mm RM. Would 140 or 150gr bullets be overkill on this small of an animal? It seems to be an overly powerful rifle for such a small species of deer. I am concerned about meat damage most of all. Thanks for the tips in advance.

Hunt with what you got. There is know such thing as "over kill".

A 7mm mag with the right bullet will do less damage to a small deer than a 243 with the wrong bullet.

Naw, just shoot them behind the shoulder. You are going to get some meat damage, but if you avoid shoulder bone, it will hopefully be lessened.

The 7mm Remington mag is a fine cartridge and the the Savage 110 is a good rifle. Wait till the deer turns sideways and put one through the ribs, heavier bullets may cause less meat damage due to lower velocity.
No such thing as overkill.....:sniper:
