So, this rifles been on display on a wall for a long time... I’ve hounded the guy for a couple of years to sell it to me, and I guess I caught him in a moment of weakness and was able to negotiate a price. It’s sporting a S.I.G. Stepped barrel, civil guard crest, and a very well beat up stock. SA stamped, so re-arsenaled during WW11 . There’s rust, on the trigger guard/magazine, and barrel crown/muzzle. It looks like this thing wore a bayonet, outside, for a very long time in some bad weather. The rest of the rifle appears to have been reasonable lubed/cared for, but the areas covered by the bayonet were not oiled. What I’d like help/suggestions with, is how to treat these areas to prevent further deterioration, with out affecting the patina/historical value of the rifle..

Use 0000 steel wool and oil to remove the rusty areas. Depending on how bad the rust is, it may take a bit of elbow grease. Afterwards, keep the rifle well oiled to prevent the rust from appearing again.

nice find and a fairly uncommon nagant.

When I thinned out my collection of nagants I kept my M24 SIG barreled nagant, only a few thousand made.

I think at the time that there was a discussion about them and that there appeared to be about a dozen or so similar rifles in Canada.

Kroil is your best friend. I love that stuff and it works amazing. Very fine steel wool will finish the job without scratching anything. Just let the Kroil sit for a while before messing with the steel wool.
