Combination guns

Calgary Shooting Ctr may have Zoli's, possibly a Merkel, they brought some in a few yrs ago, slow sellers, but nice guns. They have a Kreighoff 12ga/6.5x57R on the shelf for sure, was looking at it last weekend. There were a few at the Calgary show today, I saw one used one, that was 16/8x57R or 12/8x57r that was a reasonable price, there were a few more I didn't really spend any time looking at.

I still have a Valmet 412, 12g over .222 Rem and I have tried various Brnos, and others. But in general I find combo guns to not be accurate enough to function as rifles and too heavy to handle properly as shotguns. (Sort of like Can-Am Spyders, combining the worst aspects of motorcycles with the worst aspects of automobiles.) I suppose they make sense in Europe for driven game, when shooting medium and small game from the same stand, and where the number of firearms that you can own is restricted. However, in general our hunting is more specialized, and therefore is best done with specialized firearms. And also, at least for the time being the number of firearms we can own is not restricted.

They might also appeal to the o/u shotgunner who just wants one rifle that functions like a familiar shotgun.

If you have found combination guns to be too inaccurate for a rifle and too heavy and unresponsive to be a good shotgun then you have been playing with the wrong guns. Yes, the lower end of this group have more in common with a basic Savage combination gun, but if you step up to Kreighoff, Sauer, Merkel, etc you will find that the rifle barrels are as accurate as most hunting rifles ( or more so) with the correct ammo and as a shotgun these guns work better than most run of the mill shotguns. Set your sights higher, it's like the difference between owning and driving a Chev Cobalt and a Chev Corvette. Both are Chevs And both will take you there and back but Oh the difference in the drive!

Another favourite combo of mine is my springfield m6 scout in 22/410

X2 on the scout. I was lucky enough to get mine years ago for a good deal.

Perhaps. I have yet to shoot the Valmet. One step up at a time.

Agreed. I have a Blaser 16ga over 5.6x50r with a set trigger and claw mounted scope. Holes touch at 100yds with CCB shots. Patterns well and is a wisp to carry. It’s my close up/far away coyote rifle.

I am slowly coming to accept the buy once, cry once philosophy. My wife doesn't yet understand. I just got a couple Pfleuger spinning reels to replace old wobbly Quantums and she wasn't too impressed. Maybe it's because her gear is still low end stuff... Oops!

I like combo guns... .

...and as Chasseur notes, versatility is good when needed. My Tikka M07 (12g/222Rem) with a detachable scope and variety of ammo was a handy unit to have in the truck when cutting firewood, picking berries, etc. Not a hunting gun per se, but something that goes bang if you absolutely, positively need it...always better than a whistle or being a slow runner.

Had a savage 24 V in 223 and 20 gauge .. this one was tapped for a scope so i mounted a scope too see just how accurate it was ,, Was not impressed at all .. 100 yard gun.. with a scope ,, So basically it was an open sight gun,,. I would want a 30-30 over 20 myself
Had the same gun and also found it not too be very accurate with a scope /// 100 yards maybe .. I would want a 30-30 over 20 or 12 myself

Good combination guns are in a different world than the Savage, Springfield, and even the Valmet guns. I have a Merkel two barrel set, 16/16 and 16/7x57R, and Heym 16/.222 Rem. Rifle barrels on both are accurate as any of my bolt rifles. The Merkel handles like a good bird gun because it is one of those too. The Heym is about perfect for calling coyotes in the bush. but i've shot coyotes with it on the prairie at over 250 yds, without stretching its capabilities at all.
