How practicle are the Savage and/or Baikal combination shotgun and rifles. What is the accuracy like of the rifle barrel? Looking at the .223 over the 12 gauge, however would like to hear comments from owners regarding pros and cons.

Thanks

I have a Baikal for sale... cheap, new and unfired. I got it from a buddy who owed me some cash.
12/223, comes with choke tubes. Right now I have an IC choke but may be able to track down a complete set.

I personally don't like combo guns, I find them a bit awkward, my father on the other hand loves them, he has a savage straight stock, .22lr/20 18" bbl I must admit I do like his as it is tiny and is a takedown model and very light.

The one thing I like about the Baikal over the Savage is that it has double triggers, meaning there is no bbl selector and is actually more convenient in that sense. The Baikal also has the rifle on the bottom, the Russians have a reason for this... I'm just not sure why, something about chamber pressure (these are also avilable in 30-06)

I have a Savage 24v 222/20ga and it is very handy when I do some calling. I fill the bottom barrel with buckshot for those up close shots and with a flick of a switch I am ready for longer shots. Also if I happen to see a grouse ,I slip in a load of six's and have at'em. I have taken a number of foxes and a couple of yotes with it.

I think they'd be a great machine for walking / trail hunt.

When you are walking you have the time to change loads (providing you have your pockets organized.);)

If anyone has one for sale, I'm looking for a combo gun in something like a 22 with a 410, or something similar. Basically for upland game, in good condition, the cheaper the price the better though ;-)

If I can only own one gun, that would be a Savage 12 gauge/30-30. very handy but weight about 8 lbs.

X2 - good choice. Do they make a triple bbl 12ga over a .22LR over a 30-06? Now, that would be the one! :D

Savage

I carry a 30x30 over 20 ga.when looking for grouse and have also shot Deer with it.It is a great combo.I handload the 30x30 and do not have to load
blunt nosed lead for it.Have had several chances to sell it but like it too much.

Hey, I love that Spartan 22/410, but I was talking to the guy where I buy my guns and he said that you can't buy them in Canada anymore, does anyone have one for sale, or know of where to buy one?

The same firearm (SPARTAN) is available under it's original brand (i.e. Baikal) in Canada - here it's known as IZH 94-MP. In Ontario, several retailers (Ellwood Epps, Williams Arms etc) carry or will order one. Believe, it's marked for $375++......I would recommend, if possible first handle and get the feel of one (any firearm) prior to buying that.

They are great! I won't use another gun in the bush for the hunting I do. I've got a 30-06/12ga Valmet. Deadly accurate in 30-06 and 12ga slugs do wonders if there are a few twigs in the way.......shotgun works good on chickens and rabbits... Quick detach mounts as well.

Keep an eye out for some the older Tikka or Ithaca combination guns - made in Finland. 12 /.222 etc. Generally very reasonably priced and I doubt the Russian ones compare in fit and finish.

I have wanted one in 30.30/20 for a while now. I was lucky and just bought the one that was on the exchange a couple of days ago.

This will be the perfect gun to take along when I hunt with my daughters. 20 gauge they canb shoot grouse with and 30/30 in case a deer is spotted within reasonable range.

watch the EE, 2 savage 24's will be up this weekend hopefully;)

i really liked my 22 over 410 but where i hunt theres always the chance of shooting rabbits, waterfowl, coyote, crows, etc so my 870 always comes along with me.

If I only could have own one gun...

I read an article while ago that had that same conclusion...a Combo...22/410 or alike...I went for it, a Savage 24 in 30-30/20ga...got if from a CF Pilot that was stationned in Rimouski recruiting center...every time he went hunting he found the wrong target for the gun he had...went small game he met the big game and went for the big game he met the grouse...so his solution was that combo...got it from him when gun law came in...he quited, I took over his Sav24.....best thing I think with a single shot 30-30, is that you can reload with max velocity and speer point bullet which is not available on the factory ammo as it is mostly prepared with flat nose bullet for tube mag...so, I think this can be an advantage to have a 30-30 that can be loaded that way...for deer and may be bigger...what are reloaders/hunter saying?
