I recently bought a brno combo 12g over 308 now im looking for a scope for it. Im looking for a low powered scope with low light capabilities, low powered because of the shotgun use. Ive search alot of 1-4x,1-5x,1-6x the ones that have a 20mm-24mm objective lens pretty much the size of the tube of the scope. I like the light weight and compact aspect of these types of scopes but I have no experience with them. Am I trading off the dusk and dawn capabilities of this type of scope because the lack of objective size? should I jump up to the 2-10X scopes with 40mm-50mm objectives? anyone with experience on these scopes im a hunter and I have a particular spot where I deer hunt and the ever greens block out alot of light. I have vx-1,vx-2, bushnell 4200, bushnell Elite tactical hunter LRHS, zeiss HD5 scopes none are 50mm but I had a side by side comparison with a $300 vortex diamondback 50mm objective and it was noticebly brighter than my zeiss at low light.

I am sure someone will be along to explain how much useful light can get through to our eyes with different size objectives at different magnification powers. In my opinions the smaller size and lighter weight coupled with the lower magnification makes the straight tube scopes very useful for your applications. If low light brightness take a look at what the Europeans use for night shooting game. Fixed 6,7 or 8 power scopes and large objective lenses, less lenses inside the scope make for more light getting through.
Another option would be red dot optic. The better ones I've used are still useful as long as your eyes have enough light to see and they can be much smaller than conventional scopes particularly with 50mm objectives.

thanks for taking the time to explain it.. im gonna have to look more into this lower power needing less objective size. like I mention I have no Experience with these 1X scopes. thanks
