Commercial .308 through a stock M305?

So I got my new Norc M305 from Canada Ammo (my first rifle!) about a week ago, and the lady and I were planning on taking it out tomorrow. However, I have been looking all over the internet and phoning around and have thus far been unable to locate any NATO spec 7.62x51 ammunition.

I've seen a few threads around about shooting commercial .308 ammunition through a chinese 7.62 gun, but seem to find many people shooting both cartridges.

My question is whether anyone else has had any problems shooting commercial .308 through their stock M305, or whether I should just wait around for some surplus 762x51 to surface.
 
You could be waiting a very long time for 762x51 surplus to surface. 308 will be fine to go throught it. I dont think there 7.62 Nato chambers anyways....I am not a M1A/M14 guru though.

I'm not an expert either, although I do reload, but can someone show me an example of a 7.62X51 round that blew up a 308 Winchester, or a 308 Winchester round that destroyed a 7.62X51 chamber? This topic has been beat to death! I reload for my Ishapor 2A in 7.62X51. The dies I use are Lee and they are 308 Winchester. The Ishapor has yet to explode. However my Ishy is not a semi-auto.

308 in a 7.62 Nato is not a problem...its the other ways around where the pressures are higher than recommended aparently. I rather be safe than sorry IMO.

I know there are warnings on my Hornady TAP 556 not to use in 223 spec'd chambers.

That's a fallacy look at the link. Specifically where it says the .308 and 7.62x51 are safe to interchange according to SAAMI.

.308 ammo with bullets heavier than 150gr. may wear your op rod more heavily, but this is a long-term concern. Still, depending on where you live, it shouldn't be hard to find .308/7.62x51 ball ammo. Just about every gun shop in Alberta has some, or can tell you where to get it.
 
Never fired a single round of surplus through either of mine, and don't intend to. My reloads are way more accurate than any surplus and cheaper too
 
Thanks for all the help, I'll just man up and shoot the .308. And to clarify, the main fear I had was the pressures created by the commercial rounds. Something like 15,000 psi higher when shooting .308 vs 7.62.
 
This rumour/ fallacy is parallel to the "Yer #### will fall off!" warnings I received when I first started out 25 plus years ago with this addiction! :eek:

I have not shot any milsurp through my M14 / M1A rifles for years. Handloads are the way to go once you get established! :cheers:

I’m with Hungry on this one I have 1000’s rds through my M305 0 issues except that they are cheaper and more accurate then store and milsurp. Learn how to reload!
 
Wow! Is this one still around?!?

I have never, ever shot NATO stuff in my rifle. Why would I? With all the .308 factory stuff available so cheap. I have bags and bags of spent casing now and ya, for hunting and target I use my reloads. But for general banging of the gongs....it's the cheap 308 ammo all the way.

Relax, stop reading into the issue too much. If worst comes to worst, and you are really unsure and need to be assured, go get it checked at a gunsmiths shop or send Hungry some spent casings. He'll set ya straight.
