Hi does anyone have experience with the commercial bolt shrouds available for the small ring mausers? It looks to me, from the pictures I have seen, that they offer more of a gas deflecting flange than the original shroud. They look very similar to a M98 commercial shroud. This may be worth it for the extra protection.

The Brownell's swede shroud does have a flange like m98.
It's tight and some minor tweaking may be required to get it screwed in all the way.
Some machine marks need to be polished off before bluing.
It does look 'correct' on the rifle.
A side safety is required.

Thanks for the info. So adding a commercial shroud should improve on the gas handling of the m96 action. A couple of other mods I have read about involve drilling a vent hole in the left (or right?) receiver wall, and enlarging or adding vent holes to the bolt body. I haven't been able to find any really good info on either. Does anyone have experience with either of these mods?

I too would be interested in this. I have a beautiful 96 that I'd love to rechamber but I've been reluctant due to the lesser design of the 96 in comparison to the 98.

The action I have does have a recession in the action for the bolt handle though which I thougt was interesting.

I will "Amen!" that.

I saw what happened to a SAKO 22-250 Heavy Barrel that a guy at our club had blow up a few years ago. The barrel was unharmed, in fact I reused it, but the action was a mess, and the shooter had a face ful of gas and powder burns.

A well-known biologist up here almost lost his eyesight when a pre '64 7X57 ruptured a case head. He spent time in the hospital, and a long time recovering.

Finally, another fellow had a model 96 in 308 Win that he routinely blew primers in (go figure). Crazy, but with no problem.
