I stopped in at a gun show in Calgary AB last year and found a supplier (who's name I've since forgotten) that were showing me an AR variant that was supposed to be coming out as a non-restricted hunting legal rifle within the next few months (at the time). Now, I'm a pretty big noobie when it comes to all the confusing firearms laws and I'm not exactly sure what type of AR variant it was either. What I do know is that it was a more common hunting caliber such as a .270 or .308 and it looked A LOT like some type of AR (like the AR18/AR15/AR10)...

Just wondering what the options are for a hunting caliber AR style rifle, I was looking at the R-25's on the Remington site but I believe it's restricted or prohibited, am I right?

AR and variants are all restricted by name, so they are only good for punching holes in paper at the range.

The only way you will ever be able to hunt with an AR is if an animal happen to to walk onto the range while you are shooting.

I'm just telling you what I remember the supplier rep telling me. It looked like a tactical AR style firearm, and it was non-restricted and in the .270 and up caliber range... However as I said, I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to the identification of these firearms... I was looking at getting an M14, as it's basically a .308 and it's a semi-auto which is what I'm looking for.

I think there are a couple black rifles on the horizon 2years or 8 years or never? that'll be in 308. Rob arms is probably what he might have been talking about. I think they had something in 7.62 coming to canada.
But you are better off just getting a M14/M305 from norinco.

Caliber doesn't matter. The AR-15 and all variants are restricted BY NAME! If it is an AR, regardless of what hunting suitable caliber the upper is chambered in, it is still restricted! For instance, Remington now offers their own AR-15 hunting/varmint rifle that is marketed as a hunting/varmint rifle and is offered in .223 and .204 Ruger calibers. Comes in full hunting camo regalia and would make for an ideal Coyote rifle. However, because it remains an AR-15 under the window dressing, it remains a restricted firearm and may only be discharged at an approved range.

You saw an AR-15 type rifle chambered for 6.8 mm Rem.
That's a smaller (270 in English) round and it should be a great hunting cartridge.
The ammo is expensive and scarce though.
I'd like to buy a 6.8 kit for my Robinson XCR for deer hunting.
