I am looking for a Christmas present for a buddy and he is in desperate need of some new binos. He only hunts with the compact type so what is good and why? He uses the cheapo Bushnells and Simmons right now so hopefully there is a step up from there ?

Celestron make a nice compact 8x32 Outland LX, would retail around $140.00. FS
You may even find them in Leth. at Marksman or Thriftway drugs just up the st. from Marksman.

How compact do you want them? E.g., I have some Bushnell 7x50s and I don't often carry them since I got some Minox 6.5x32s which to me are quite compact, but I would guess most people's idea of compact would be something with objective lenses under 30mm. Is that what you mean?

What is the budget? I got those Minox binoculars from Camera Land Inc, a site sponsor, for what I think is a very good price for something of their quality. They are certainly a big step up from cheap Bushnell and Simmons models. I have heard many people speak well of the optical quality/ per $ of Vortex and of Brunton binoculars.

I purchased a set of Swarovski 10x25 for inconspicuous use when traveling to other countries. Very high quality glass in a compact package. The case can be worn on a belt in place of a blackberry.

small binocs..

I have a set of Nikon compact that are great but limited....I have a set of Svarovski 8 X 30 compact that are superb but heavy and expensive....go with the Nikons..
