Decided I need another rifle...chambered in 7mm08, 6.5 Creedmoor, 260 rem or possibly .308. Would like a Compact or Youth model preferably in stainless. Any advice or firsthand experience on the current offerings? I'm really liking the rem model 7 in 7-08

Looking to be under 1000$ for the bare rifle but can go higher. Seems like lots of options exist but not seeing much on the shelves for online retailers. Any leads appreciated as well.

Tikka makes a battue rifle that is quite short already!! My buddy hunts with one and it is a nice rifle!
 
That looks really good. What brake is that? What is lop of stock?

I picked up a Savage 110 Lightweight Storm 6.5CM for my daughter last winter. Super light, adjustable LOP, fluted bolt, 20" stainless light profile barrel. I added Talley LW rings and a VX2 2-7x. She shoots better than I do...:)

These can be had for $849-$899 in several calibres.

I suspect going to be tough to find a new one in Canada? I asked Prophet River to order a Ruger 77 Compact in 243 Win in Nov. 2020 - they still have not received them, I don't think?? I subsequently had bought a used one on CGN EE, with Clay Smiley's encouragement, after 6 months waiting and no sign of the new one.

I have a sweet little Mod 7 in .308 It is just so light and handy. Very accurate. Points like a wand. Easy 1 hand carry. I am also a fan of the Ruger compacts and lightweights. Just dont own one ATM.
 
The Weatherby Vanguard S2 Compact is a nice rifle. It has a 20' barrel and 12.5' LOP and a stock spacer that adds an inch if need be. Not sure what the current pricing is on these but I think they are reasonable....:confused:
I have one in 7-08 that I picked up a few years back and I quite like it.

I love my 2 vanguards but of all the words that can be used to describe them, light is not one I would use. Not a deal breaker, but half the fun of compacts is the nimbleness of them. I find my mod7 infinitely more "swingable" than my 20" Vanguard. Just me though.

That's true.
I have a standard Vanguard and a compact version and I like both of them. My compact 7-08 weighs in at 6.5 pounds (with no glass) so while not super light it isn't too bad at all and I really like the way it handles. The Vanguards are really good, accurate rifles in my opinion and I love the 3-position safety. As you say they are not super-lights but they also don't cost a fortune although they have recently gone up in price just like everything else out there.....:(
I've always been kind of interested in a Model 7 but haven't bought one yet........
 
Model 7 is a great deal and well balanced lightweight rifle

Seems like LOP is important or the kimber American would be a good suggestion, cut barrel if necessary

Savage 110 are coming with adjustable LOP, I believe that Ruger scouts and t3x models do as well? Might be good if the rifle is intended for someone who is still growing (lengthwise).
 
Found a model 7 in 7mm08 and another in .260. Checks most of the boxes. I think I'll start with these and try a few different platforms as I find em. Beauty of the EE, although Canada Pist seems to be putting a damper on that. Hard to figure how shipping goods is at an all time high yet these clowns can't make a go of it.

For comparison, I had to dig out the Ruger 77 Hawkeye Compact in 243 Win - weighs 6 pounds 13 ounces with a Leupold VX-1 2-7x33 scope mounted in Ruger #4 + #5 rings - so Medium height. No ammo, no sling.
