I am looking to buy a reasonable compact variable scope for a rifle. NcStar makes a 3x9 but I am not hearing a lot of good things. Does anyone know of one of the better manufactures that makes a dependable compact I can put on my SKS for hunting.

I know a lot of people say you don't need a scope on an SKS but with my vision the way it is I really like a scope on my rifles.

One of my favourite scopes is the Leupold 1-4x20mm variable. I've got a bunch on assorted rifles and love'em. This would be the perfect power range for an SKS...I think 3-9x is way more than necessary for that gun/cartridge combination.

Sorry, I'm away from home for a few weeks. I can't access one to measure it, but they are very compact, maybe about 9 inches long. Eye relief is excellent as well. You should be able to get specs off Leupold's website. Their 1.5-5x20mm is a tiny bit longer, and much more expensive. The 1-4x20 is, I believe, in the VX2 line.
