Evening, question for the you pro's. All things being equal, should a 40 grain 204 bullet at 3700 fps and a 40 grain 223 bullet at 3700 fps have approx. the same effect on a coyote?? ie - fur damage and killing effect?
Thank's in advance
Ken

I in no way claim to be pro but i know from personal use that a 20cal 40gr Berger varmint bullet is alot more hide friendly than a 22cal 40gr Berger bullet. Both bulets will however deliver DRT preformance with the right shot placement. By this time next year I will be able to tell you the details about the 30gr loads as well.

Assuming the same twist rate, same style of projectile (HP, Spitzer, Soft Point, etc..)

The 223 should leave a bigger hole in the pelt since it's the bigger bullet.

From all I have read in the OLD shooting books though ... in this case the smaller bullet may leave a bigger hole if it has a faster twist rate ... causes more internal damage, and by extension, more damage during exit. By faster, I'd say the idea of comparing a 1:9 to a 1:16 ... if you are comparing 1:10 to 1:12, then i think the difference would be virtually un-noticable.

Ideally, something that doesn't exit (extreme Hollow Point, Varmint Grenade, etc..) woudl be ideal - then you would be left with only the entry dot.

Yes the two should be fairly close in carnage capablity if the bullets were identical construction. When talking about two identical exploding bullets velocity and weight are the two main factors in how big a hole will be created from the explosion. The tiny differnce in frontal area between 20 and 22cal is meaningless.
