I live in Saskatoon, and have been shooting only for a few months and really enjoy it. I know Im not very good, but I think it would be fun to compete in the future. I would even travel to Alberta or something to compete for fun.

My problem is, I have no idea how to get into competitive target shooting, who to talk to, where to go or anything.

Any help would be great, thanks.

Although i'm not in Saskatoon, I just am starting competitive IPSC shooting. I am attending my Black Badge course next weekend and have all my gear ready! Even though I don't even compete yet, its very fun and interesting dry firing and doing reloads in my basement. Let me tell you though, while its been fun you have to lay out quite some cash at the beginning if you are starting from scratch (like I did) but its still costly if you need to get your belt, holster, mag pouches, ammo, etc.... Anyway, I can honestly say not even started yet, its looks really fun and I look forward to competing soon! Good luck with what you choose to do as their are many other disciplines too (like IDPA for example)! Just look around on youtube and the action forum too to find out more info! :)

Hi Heptigon. The Saskatoon Wildlife Federation is home to some competitive handgun shooting. Now that we are in winter season the schedule is every Tuesday in the indoor range is PPC practice, and every Wednesday in the indoor range is IPSC practice (really just on-the-click action handgun practice stages). These are free activities if you are SWF member with indoor range privileges. See the SWF website for exact schedule.

Even if you aren't a member feel free to come check it out.

We also generally have one IPSC match per month on a Saturday, but you need your IPSC black badget to participate in that.

Does SWF host black badge courses?

Yes, we just had a couple recently. I'm out at the range every Wednesday by 6pm. P.M me for further info if needed. We usually hold competitions monthly and love new people getting involved! There are plenty of fun shooting events right here in Saskatchewan once you know where to look. Don't worry if you haven't been shooting long, we all start from the beginning. Sometimes the hardest thing is just to show up the first time.

Yep, as smiley1 and adamg mentioned we have a couple different groups that shoot fairly regularly at the SWF. Come check us out sooner rather than later, theres lots of people who will gladly give you some helpful shooting tips and let you see/try all sorts of different gear so you can figure out what will work best for you before you spend a ton of money.

If you are looking to do ISSF or NRA bullseye we shoot a lot of it in PA and I believe Regina does too, not sure about Saskatoon. Like was mentioned before check out the Sask Handgun Assn website, or our website for the Prince Albert Pistol & Rifle Club paprc.ca for match info for skeet/ trap, ISSF, cowboy action, silhouette, and tri-gun.

Does anyone have any contacts that I can talk too, on how I can learn more about getting my black patch in Saskatchewan?!?

Your best bet is to come check out the IPSC club on Wednesday nights at the SWF indoor. We had about a dozen guys of varying skill/experience levels out last night, including 3 who just got their black badge and are getting ready to shoot their first match. The instructors we have in SK prefer that you have shot a couple of the wednesday night shoots before doing the black badge, so you have an idea of the basics and the course can run efficiently.

"...how to get into competitive target shooting..." Which one? There's bullseye and the running around and shooting kind. Usually best to start with bullseye to learn sight picture, trigger control and breathing first. Certainly not a mandatory thing though.
