I like the idea of a Galil style handle on the sks too.

The variation available once you make the decision to take the plunge are endless. You could buy a bolt designed for a bolt action rifle from a parts store and weld it on upside down to allow access from both sides too.

From what I have been told in the past when welding a bolt you have to be careful not to change it's temper with the heat associated with welding. I hope you wrapped the bolt to keep it cool . nothing like ending up in the hospital with a piece of bolt in one's head.

he welded the "bolt carrier", not the bolt. It's been done many times and the worst I've seen is the handle falling off.
