If I was just starting out to load the 308 Winchester, I would buy a box of Hornady 165 grain Interlocks and a lb of Reloder 15 [or Varget] and soon be shooting an accurate, effective load. Regards, Eagleye.

Do you want to reload target ammo, plinking ammo or hunting ammo?

That will help you decide on which bullets to use.

Good powders for the 308 are Varget, IMR4064, IMR 4895 and BLC(2) among others.

I recommend CCI BR2 primers, as I've had good success with them.

Exactly, you need to decide what you are going to do with your hand loads before selecting components.

However,I prefer Federal primers, because I had a few dud CCI primers long ago,and won't use them again for that reason.I guess that I hold a grudge for a long time.;)

I have 3 .308s that I use IMR 4895 or Varget with 180's, 165's, 150's, and 110's. Just depends on which rifle I'm using and what bullet weight.

Bullets I've tried are :

Hornady 110 vmax, 150 SST, 165 SST, 165 IB, 180 SST. 180 SP
Barnes 165 TSX, 168 TSX
180 Nosler Partitions.

They all shoot well once you have the powder/charge figured out. I don't shoot match bullets, as I don't compete, strictly hunting loads.

i just picked up all the stuff to reload .308 today,i bought the lee aniversary kit, seems pretty straight forward.

i opted for the varget as my powder and federal brass, trying to track down primers(anyone know any in southern ontario?), 100hornady amax, 100hornady amax moly.

No primers at Gagnon's??

I've never had any luck with Federal brass, even the anemic loads seem to expand the primer pocket enough that I can't use it more than twice. I generally use Win brass, sometimes Rem.

well either that or the lee full length die is garbage. case got stuck it pulled the decapper out and now its all bent to ####, this was the very first case, garbage.

maybe its the brass, but now im out a full length die within 8 hours of gettin it outta the box

Yeah, the nut on top of the die isn't tight from the factory, and needs to be tightened. I did the same thing, but didn't bend it all to ####. Call Higginson Powders and tell them you need a Lee .30 cal decapper pin. They'll mail one to you, I think its $5. I presume you lubed the case slightly??

If it is just the decapping pin, straighten it as best you can. You are just knocking out the primer with it so as long as it goes through the hole.
X2 on Federal cases and on the lube.

If you can't find a good load with these components your 308 is broken.

@ Lfsabch: I have seen RARE instances where there was a rough spot or burr inside a die; I had an RCBS die like that, and one Lee as well.

I suspect however that the case wasn't lubed properly or the die was adjusted WAY too far down?

FWIW for lube, I've found Lyman spray lube to be the best by far. Just stand all your cases in a loading block, give 'em a spritz on either side, then lube the necks with a Q-tip (though I prefer a pipe cleaner).

With the Lyman lube, I also give a light spritz to the inside of the die. Let the lube dry for a little while; it dries to a nice thin film.

i will be loading for the range plinking, but looking for relatively cheap shooting of course not all the time but for the days when just out to have fun. that brings me to where do you get component i spend a fair amount of time looking for brass and bullets whers a good place to find some, when im at the range i always pick up brass people leave behind.
