Picked up a 2017 shot show Silver hunter matte 20 ga on the week end . got it home and was looking it over be for stripping it down for cleaning . something about the serial number didn't make sense to me . can you pick out what is wrong with the serial number ?

Yes I can understand how that could happen when they first changed from the gold to the silver . But stamping a silver with the 114 prefix 8 years after the switch over is a bit strange .

To add to the mystery the carton sticker does not say Silver Matte Hunter . which I did note on the box of the 26" barrel model I had out of the box . but this one had much nicer wood .

The reason for that is because the 20ga Silver is actually a 20ga Gold Classic. They renamed it Silver at the same time as they introduced the then new 12ga Silver. There are only very minor differences to the breech bolt as far as I remember. Due to low production numbers of the 20ga they never bothered changing out the tooling for the barrel roll stamps and serial number engravings. As far as I know all 20ga Silver models carry the Gold "114" serial number prefix.

I do realize that the 20ga gold and the silver are one in the same platform . I owner a silver 20ga previous to this one and I am quite certain it was marked with113 model code .
