Afternoon everyone.

I've run into abit of confusion regarding magazines for the bolt action Mossberg MVP LC in .308. I have asked 6 different people and got 6 different answers. Here is the issue, the rifle in question is owned by a good friend of mine. It came with a 5 round mag from Cabelas but it doesn't load reliably and the bolt actually scores the top of the round in the mag when chambering another one. We noticed this problem at the range yesterday. I happened to have a few SR25 pattern Gen2 .308 Pmags 5/20 with me so we tried them out. They worked like soap on a glass floor, super slick and reliable. My friend wants to run these type of mags now but wants to know if he can "unpin" them since they are for use in a bolt action. Ideally he wants to buy the 10 round version and unpin those but trying to decode to firearms law regarding mag limits got somewhat murky and confusing when we tried to look this up.

Any advice would be great and much appreciated.

Not terribly confusing. The law is regarding the magazine not whether the rifle is bolt or semi....

Sr mags and other ar10 mags are limited because they are designed for semi rifles.
There are no high capacity mags designed for the MVP. It was designed to use ar10 mags.

Therefore all mags currently able to be used by the MVP. Are limited.

No problem... I have a MVP in .223.

The funny part is the rifle is designed to use AR-15 mags.... So 5 rounds...
But 10 round LAR mags And 15 round Beowulf mags work fine.

Yet the 10 round MVP mag that came with it is pinned to 5....

It is identical to the 10 rounds.... But pinned.... Yet if I were to remove the pin I would be breaking the law...

Dumb eh?

Ya its pretty muffed up. I personally shoot a Savage 110 FCP .308 in a MDT Tac21 which uses 10 rounders no prob and my friend wanted the same capacity but ill let him know xcr pistol mags are probably the only route. While they are still legal >.<

He could run a XCR-M pistol mag if he wants 10 rounds, they would be like the LAR-15 .223 in a .308 version, I'm thinking they should fit? Not sure who makes a poly version, ATRS was advertising the development of one.
