Congrats to my Father in Law for winning what I think is the Nobel Prize of hunting.

The Carlo Caldesi Award for the Trophy of the Year ( CCA ) is an award instituted to honor the best big game trophy, in terms of difficulty of hunt, rarity and score, taken in one particular year by an active Member of Safari Club International ( S.C.I. ).The CCA is named after Dr Carlo Caldesi, the only Italian to have achieved so far the highest honors in international big game hunting: being the recipient in 1981 of the "Weatherby Hunting and Conservation Award", in 1983 of the S.C.I. Hall of Fame Award and in 1987 of the S.C.I. International Hunting Award. The Award itself will be a silver and bronze sculpture made out of friendship by artist Corrado Gambotti and given as a present by the Caldesi family every year.

He shot a Lord Derby Eland in the Central African Republic that garnered him the attention of the judges.
I won't post his name until it's on the official website as the ceremony was May 31, 2013.

I use the Nobel Prize as an example 'cause no one understands what the heck this award is.
It's the Stanley Cup of hunting doesn't make any sense.
Angus, I think the PH was Francois? Or something? PM me the next time you are in Cowtown/Millarville and I'll introduce you. I think ou'd get along very well with him.
He was supposed to go back in April to the same area but civil unrest made it to sketchy.

Sounds great and if there's a chance his name's Kent I know him! There's a good few guys around who do interesting hunts in the area though eh. Yes indeed, could it be Christophe Morio? French fellow as well.

Well a tip of the hat to him, and well done! Would love to chat with him, I imagine he chased Bongo as well there.

Not trying to hate, but SCI recognizes animals killed in canned hunts. Was the Eland harvested free range?

in CAR or Central Africa Republic there is no such a thing of canned hunt = that Eland was for sure harvested free range ... hope it s helping you ...

i lived there ofr enough years to know about that ...

The reason you can't find anything about CAR or Congo or many other African countries banning highfence hunting is that they've never even heard of it. That is almost exclusively a SA and Namibian thing. There may be some in Zim but I never saw any the 2 trips I was there, only cattle fencing. Never even saw a fence of any kind in Botswana or Zambia or Congo. 90% of African hunting outside of SA is truly wild and unfettered fair chase hunting. You definitely have the wrong impression of African hunting, you can certainly buy canned hunts in Africa but not all African hunts are canned by any stretch of the imagination and certainly not in CAR or 90% of the rest of Africa.

Thanks,

I guess part of the reason I thought canned hunting was so prevalent is actually SCI itself. Basically all of their records are stacked with 'hunters' who have taken fenced animals. The impression I get is that the organization lacks any legitimacy with real hunters because of this. I struggle to understand how a hunting organization cannot be opposed to canned hunts, especially when there are apparently so many opportunities for fair chase....

Strange thing is, I have all the SCI record books and it doesn't specify if the animals were taken behind a high fence or not. Care to share where you're getting your info from?

Better yet, don't derail a thread of this guy's father in law getting a well deserved award by your misinformed rhetoric. I suggest you start with reading which high fence hunt entries SCI actually allows, here:
