Considerations for another Milsurp Plinker

Good evening.

I was hoping I could gather some opinions from CGN on what would be a good plinking milsurp. I have a number of self-loading rifles but my fav in 308 is now on the no-no list. I would like to be able to select something still in 308 if possible but am open to other relatively common cartridges that can be found in surplus quantities. I have an m1 carbine, m1 garand and SKS. I would like to add to that.

I am considering a garand in 308 or perhaps a FN49. I must admit I do not know a lot about FN49's but do find them to be attractive guns. Were they ever produced in any quantity in 308?

Other considerations?

Thanks for the opinions.

PS - I am not looking to be crucified about "telling the government about the other semis out there". They are well aware of what is out there...they don't need to come to CGN to find that info.

There are very few FN 49s in 7.62x51. Israeli, Brazilian and Spanish Mausers were made up in 7.62x51.

There are a couple more .308s to add to the list - Israeli K98 conversion; Spanish FR-8 (or FR-7); Century MAS 49-56; and .... no doubt others.

I know it's not a semi...or 308. But I have a pattern 14 enfield in .303. It's a laser. So for 30cal I'd say US model 1917 in 30-06. I love my no4 enfield..
But easy tie...with the p14. Not sure if you shoot any 30-06 though.

Since you put on a .308 barrel, you'll need the cartridge discriminator block for the front to the lower receiver. Although the clip holds the cartridges firmly, if one was to dance forward it would jam the loading cycle.

FWIW, Ramline make/made an injected plastic M1 Garand stock. It is slimmer and has checkering, but has the inlets for John Cantius Garand's best effort. From personal experience, the felt recoil is less because the stock has a certain whip springiness. The sight alone will make every USGI purist rivet counter have a stroke, but in for a penny, in for a pound.
