Considering a semi auto for informal 3 gun/tactical plinking etc

As the title states


Want to set up a semi12g to plink, informal gun game and the like.
NOT up for the $$ of a Benelli so lets get that straight 1st.

Looking for experience people have had or at least 1st hand observed with the Mossy 930, Stoeger 3000 and maybe the Win SX3

I am already leaning toward an inertia design as I am lazy on cleaning and have been down the rabbit hole with 1100/1187 O rings, gas ports etc and not interested there.

I will shoot a lot of birdshot and other light loads as it's cheap, easy shooting and available so the gun HAS to digest this stuff....

I'll hijack your thread a littlebit as I'm on the fence between Standard and Standard Manual.. Does anyone own/has anyone owned both a 930 and an M2? Any comparison on how they feel/handle/shoot? I handled an M2 and fell in love with it but also way out of my budget, especially if I put together a precision rig.
 
If your cant fund a Semi Auto Benelli then a Remington 1100P would be my second choice

But it budget is an issues, a Good pump is better then a cheap semi any day of the week.

I have shot both and allow me to share a short story.

When I first started in 3 gun (maybe 4-5 years ago now) I was told at the beginning to buy an M2. My reaction was the same as the OP. Way too damn expensive!

So, I started with a 590....a good choice, but needed to add chokes. $$$ right there. plus I went with extended chokes since they are easier...more $$$

Then, after not too long, I figured I needed a semi to compete better in the US....Plus, with small extensions I pretty much have the same start capacity as a pump gun in canada... Again, that damn M2 is too expensive!. So, I got a 930. Cut the barrel, threaded and was good to go.

Then, I decided I wanted to move to load 2/4 to compete better...plus I didn't like that my 930 failed due to improper cleaning (I hate cleaning guns). So, I finally bought the M2. I waited for ever to find a used one and finally did and got a decent deal. Got the benelli threaded extended chokes, had some receiver work done, and a couple other small things and I can't believe I waited so long to move to this platform. With the load 2/4, my shotgun enjoyment has increased dramtically, if not my shooting skill (which is coming along nevertheless).

Moral of story, I should have bought the M2 4-5 years ago.


To the OP....the 930 is a great gun for what you want. But if you have any shred of expectation that this 'informal' shooting is going to become a bigger more dedicated hobby, then buy once, cry once.

In the shooting circle here in Ontario, everyone is moving to the M2....there are other good options, V-Max, SBE2, 1301, etc....but the point is, right now, you can benefit from everyone else's experience.
 
Best advise, save a little longer and just get a Benelli. You'll be a lot happier in the end and won't end up p--ssing money away trying to make up for the short comings of the other shotguns.

The Benelli aint gonna happen.

I am clear on the concept of what is required for a truly high functioning semi auto and IF I was pursuing a platform to compete with or play seriously I would spend on a Benelli...but I'm NOT...I'm just fawkin around....I am clear on this.

Own more than a dozen 870's in sporting/competition/wilderness configs. If/When I am relying on a shotgun to preserve life and or any other serious reason a properly specd and verified 870 is my choice...it will NEVER be a semi anything.

I put a pretty fine point on the rationale and approach for this semi auto shotgun spec.....I don't expect a ~$500 semi auto shotgun to provide everything my heart desires nor be a milspec high end shooting machine.
What I am looking for is actual experience and or advice on laying out ~$500 on a semi auto that will function as best as poss fed lighter ammo and not be a total POS with respect to build quality, and or known issues.
Pretty much looking for reasons to tip me toward either the 930/M3000/SX3 direction.....and more likely looking to see any horror stories to keep me away from the M3000 as I do think the inertia design is a good go from reliability and function point of view especially shooting low cost ammo and not cleaning it too often.

Oh and frankly...I have more fun shooting 870's in competition as best I can than being outright faster with a semi...takes more effort/concentration/skill on the part of the operator...me...which is why I do it in the 1st place.:cool:

This semi experiment is simply that...fawkin around hosin' out cheap ammo..... quickly and loudly...:shotgun:

Just lookin' to avoid a complete waste of time/money on a gun that may already be proven to be a waste of time.
 
You should be able to find a used 930 on the EE for roughly the $500 mark....probably with extras included

In my experience, as long as you keep the gas ports, gas rings and outside of the mag tube clean, it will function just fine. That doesn't mean it needs to be cleaned all the time, just once in a while. I didn't clean mine for a year before it finally jammed, and it was on a really hot day where the gases just crusted on the gas rings

I read some people had problems with the 930 cycling light loads, but I never experienced this problem.

The gun is actually a great gun for its price range, and can easily double as a hunting gun.

I have no direct experience with your other options, so I can't comment on them\
 
Thanks for the heads up. Any way I look at it, an M2 is not in my budget at the moment.. In the future? Quite possible, if I don't get a Saiga (moving where they are legal but almost as expensive as M2's are here) and go open. Unless I LOVE the 930, chances are I'll be going with a pump.
