What brand AR would you all suggest for a newby to AR's? Was looking at NEA and Dlask? Also are these possible to shoot left handed or are you asking for brass to the face?

Thanks?

M&P Sport II, may have a couple used ones in the EE ;)

99.99999% of the AR15 variants have brass deflectors, so no issues for lefties (for the brass thing anyways). You'd have to get an ambi charge handle, bolt & mag release for a true lefty rifle.

I still have my Norinco CQA, was my first AR and second firearm i ever purchased. I have ran approx 1500 rounds down the barrel and to be honest i cannot think of it having a single issue to date. Doesn't look the prettiest but it gets the job done and is affordable.

The AR was designed to be fired from either shoulder no matter what people try to tell you. All controls can be operated efficiently from either shoulder, it's just a little different motion. The brass deflector is designed to expel the brass forward so the shooter isn't hit in the face by empties.
I know a couple guys who shoot the AR left handed and they have zero issues. I've tried it and have had zero issues other than I don't shoot as well left handed, practice practice practice.
Try one first before you spend the extra money on a rifle with ambidextrous controls and/or left side ejection.

Do you think that the military issues a different rifle to leftys? Nope.

I would go with the M&P-15 for a budget friendly first AR.

What price range are you looking at? I have a true ambi configured AR-15 that I'm looking to get rid of. Right hand side bolt release and ambi mag catch built into the lower.

S&W m&p 2. Avoid NEA or BCL, whatever they call themselves now.
WAAY too many documented issues with their stuff to even consider it reliable.

Not really sure yet on budget as I am still doing my research.

Thanks

The AR-15 entered mass production in 1959, but the brass deflector was not incorporated into the design until 1982. Given that something like 3 million were made for the Vietnam war, I think that substantially more than 0.000001% of the guns out there are lacking the brass deflector.

And contrary to some of the other comments, brass in the face of southpaws was a common and persistent complaint, one that merited all sorts of attempts at field fixes and ad-hoc mesures for a long time, until the "Brunton bump" was finally adopted with the M16A2. Any standard, flat-top upper will have the Brunton brass deflector, but there are a whole array of retro uppers and fancy billet machined models that may not. And those very well may force feed you with empties.

Shooting a AR15 as a lefty is a non issue. As a lefty I can attest to this. A good entry level AR15 is the S&W M&P Sporter. Its a decent rifle for the price. I would pick one up myself if I was looking for another AR.

If your budget is $700 or so get the S&W, for $300 more you can order a Colt Expanse M4 16" from Cabelas. That's what I would do, being a Colt and all.

Where’s KiddX when you need him?

OP, the sky’s the limit on ARs. Best to talk to someone knowledgeable and open minded about what you want to do with it. ARs for CQB will be set up differently than ARs for DMR or precision.

For your first one, stay away from NEA. Even though their products are suppose to be better now, their reputation still dogs them.

Go with S&W, Stag Arms, Colt USA, Wyndham Weaponry, Rainier Arms, Daniel Defense, and Colt Canada.

And any AR with a case deflector will be fine for a lefty. Get a Raptor charging handle also. You won’t regret it!
