Considering Tokerev variant. 7.62 or 9mm?????

Hello again fellow nutz, I am seriously considering a Zastava M70A. Looking for input on which caliber from people with more experience than me. 9mm is the easy choice. It's available, pretty cheap, and pretty well entrenched in North America so I don't foresee any shortages. The 7.62 is corrosive ammo it's true and availability will come in waves I expect but presently I can buy a ton of it cheap as dirt. If I buy two mil surp. cases it will probably outlast the gun. It seems that the 7.62 packs a lot more punch and may be more fun to shoot.



Your thoughts???
 
You may be better off with the 9mm depending on your range's rules. Are the surplus 7.62 rounds steel jacketed? If they are, many ranges especially indoor ranges may restrict their use. If the ammo is one that is restricted by your local range, then even though it may be cheaper it may not be usable easily. Most, if not all 9mm will not be a problem in this way.
 
Well i picked up a russian in 762x25 and there is range friendly ammo available but really sparse , so i got some for when im not going to outdoor range
and some cheapo original stuff for outdoor blasting
i like the 762x25 as it was meant to be ,,, have others for 9mm

I put the cart before the horse while waiting on my restricted and bought a surplus case of 7.62x25 and then after thinking about it a bit bought 2000 rds 9mm half steel half brass and figured at least I'd be covered for both for a good while. Other than air guns and the Nintendo zapper I never shot pistols in my life until borrowing others to get my safety shoots done at the range I joined this year.
I'm planning on a tokarev (russian) in 7.62x25 since mags are easy arena cheap to find. Then plan to get 9ne of those range combo set ups in 9mm either by colt or isreali arms with the 3 mags, holster and box. Nothing to fancy but would let me have fun messing around at the range for ages. I know you shoot more ammo generally with pistols than rifles but over 4k btw two pistols should last me at least till the next election...

That makes me laugh. I did the same thing with 9mm. When Obama made suggestion that he might target 223 I figured America was going to panic again and buy every bullet available. Last time it happened you couldn't buy 22 cal ammo for love! My 9 was on order then so I bought 1000 rounds only to cancel the order. Now i have an arsenal of 9 with no pistol....like a barn with no horse....ha! Had been leaning towards the Zastava because it's cheap. having spoken with a few gunnutz I know...am now leaning to the IWI 941. I want the CZ but can't justify it.....so this might be my compromise....and a way to avoid 1000 in retaliatory spending by the loving wife .....;)
 
Chadeech. Have you had any issues with quality? My "gunsmith" bud says he has seen sights come off the TT vaients and some say they aren't accurate. I'm no competition shooter but I'd like to hit what i'm aiming at. Is your pistol accurate or is it "bad guy|" accurate at "bad breath distance"lol

well mines not a variant its a russian refurb Tula like the SKS It is no laser accurate competition shooter but to 20 yards i get it in a group on a 8 inch good enough for me
for a gun over 60 years old its a beast and a whole lot of fun everyone should have one with their Mosin and SKS original russian made perfection

You can always reload for 7.62x25, so that you don't have to bother cleaning after using corrosive ammo. The factory stuff is snappy, but I got tired of that halfway through the first box.
 
Thanks for all the replies folks. The cracked slide is a deal breaker. Cheap is cheap for a reason I guess. I will be looking for a cz or a Jericho.

Ive fired a Tok like the one pictured. I found the gun small, and thin and odd to grip. My shots were all over the place. For $239 I guess it's at least something to shoot.

I think I'd rather get a pistol that shoots 22LR rather than getting a Tok.
