Controlled round feed rifle?

I've been using a push feed Sako for 9 years now and I'd like to try something w/ CRF. I had an M38 in 6.5 Swede for a while and really enjoyed it but it was milsurp; not a hunting rifle. :p

Anyway, I'm not looking to break the bank so I'm not interested in Kimbers or pre-64 Winchesters just yet. Just a good, economic CRF hunting rifle. Ruger 77, CZ550, Brno, Parker Hale....what would be a good place to start for $600 or less?

If you were to look for a used rifle then all of the above are options but for new guns with CRF actions $600 is not enough, bump it up a little and you should be able to pick up any of the above. My vote would go for a M70 if you can find one but they are getting scarce now, second choice would be the Ruger and I would get either one of them in stainless steel.

I've read that Rugers have undergone a lot of changes over the years. Some of them have a hybrid push feed/controlled feed system and some have a plunger ejector instead of a fixed blade. Does anyone know which are most similar to the 98 Mauser or are those the newer 77 MkII's?

You might be interested to know that the same rifle in Sweden usually in original milsurp configuration bags allot of their Moose (size of our elk) each year. :)

The MKII is a full on CRF action.

It's not exactly like a mauser, but it is an updated CRF that allows the bolt top be closed on chambered shells.:)

If you wanta CRF you will not be dissapointed in a MKII

That's interesting....I didn't think that was possible with mauser extractors. I wonder if it's the only one that does that?

I'm finally starting to understand the whole "push feed vs CRF" debate. And I'm liking the CRF. :cool:

I have three FN Mausers and a 1908 Brazilian with an FN extractor that will close on a push-fed round.

I rarely bother with it though - I just use them as they were meant to be used.

It's a reasonably easy modification to allow any Mauser type CRF to close on a chambered round. A little work to the back side of the extractor shoulder will allow it.

M38 is a wonderful hunting rifle. I got to beding yours and recrowned it.... I will keep you posted. that :p will turn into :cool: .
But since we're talking about hunting rifles, CZ is a good place to start. Why? Beats the heck out of all others by simply sticking to the Mauser design. I'd get a used CZ, but I have to admit that every choice would be good. I do not know any CRF action that had a reputation to not perform.

That was a pretty sweet rifle and without a doubt the main reason I'm thinking of getting a CRF sporting rifle. 1941 Husky, if I remember correctly, and it functioned so smoothly...even makes the Sako feel "rickety". :eek: ;)

Thanks for the info and suggestions. The Browning Safari thread has me considering one of those as well. :cool:
