Converting 3inch to 3/12?

I think the length would cause more of a problem than pressure. Also the liability factor would be a deterrent for most gunsmiths.
 
The lenght would be the big problem. Besides reaming out the chamber, it would probable be necessary to change the carrier, shell latches, and to open the ejection port for the longer shell. And there would still be no guarantees it would work then. The problems with converting a semi auto would be even worse. I also doubt that a competent gunsmith would do it. Overall, it just not worth it.

But he's asking about an over/under, not a pump or semi......
 
the chamber and forcing cone can be lengthened to accomodate 3 1/2 inch shells providing there's enough metal thickness to do it. there usually is, depending on the manufacturer, but i really don't know that it's worth it to go to 3 1/2 " shells anyway.i've never seen an absolute nessecity where they are needed. at 30 to 35 yds. a 2 3/4 " shell will do what you want it to do even with steel shot on waterfowl.
