Hello,
I have a 6.5 CM in an MDT chassis and was wondering what’s involved in changing it to 6.5 PRC.
Rem 783 action.
I currently have a rem 783,MDT chassis ,chambered in 6.5 CM and a Browning X bolt SS stalker chambered in 7 mm Rem mag.
So I was thinking, I could ditch both and get a 6.5 PRC and have the best of both.
Cut down on reloading for 2 guns, one powder ,Primer, brass etc.
I use it for target shooting, moose , bear .

Thanks

Hi, not to derail your thread but I have thought of something pretty similar! Combine everything into one rifle in 6.5PRC for long range target shooting, deer and elk hunting. Has anyone experimented with downloading the 6.5PRC to 6.5CM levels for target shooting? Is it as easy as putting say 40gr of H4350 into the PRC case?

I'm building one from scratch, what's the twist rate of your current barrel? or are you going to "re-barrel" it?. I just bought a barrel. I hope the factory ammo situation improves, at least till I can set up to reload. Good Luck. The action should work, the 6.5PRC is built on a short action, however if your using longer bullets a long action should work. Barrel twist you want a 1-8? or 1-7.5.

It’s a 1-8 twist, but it’s only 16.5 in length.

I’m thinking of going with a 20 inch barrel as I don’t think the 16.5 barrel will burn the magnum powder.

I’m not sure about the bolt face or what’s involved in that.
I’ve read that I’ll need 300 WSM mags as well.

Ya , magnum bolt face (.545) and the WSM mags, I went with a 24" barrel to max performance out of the bullet etc.

The Nosler sight list 3047 FPS with a 140 g bullet out of a 26 inch barrel. Using RL 26, which I have.
I’m thinking a 20 inch barrel would cost me approximately 120 FPS. I can live with that.
The benefits of 1 rifle , 1 bullet weight (140 g), one powder to reload for is what I like.

It depends on the action a tikka is fairly easy. It’s not on a sako etc.[/QUOTES
I see you updated your post to include your action type. I’m not familiar with that action I’m not sure if that action can be opened up somebody else with knowledge on that might chime in.

The barrel is retained by a Savage nut.
Barrel swaps are easy.
Only problem With the current barrel is, it’s only 16.5 long.
I think that’s to short for the 6.5 PRC.

So a barrel will cost me 4 to 5 hundred, mag $80.
I’m not sure what changing the bolt face costs.
And I’m not sure if the MDT chassis would work either.

Maybe I’m better off selling my Rem 783 and my Browning Xbolt and just buying a 6.5 PCR and drop it in a Chassis?

Everything I’ve read says it’s a waste of time to do that.
You must have a lot of H 4350 on hand?? Lol

Haha yes I have a decent quantity of H4350 but that’s not really why. Seems like it would be interesting to just vary the charge depending on what task is required. Lower charge/ velocity for targets and deer, bump it up to full power for elk.

Sell it all and buy a proper 6.5 PRC. Doesn’t Tikka do one?
Yes they do.
I was thinking more along the lines of a Savage 110 Tactical. I don’t see what the extra $400 that the Tikka has to offer?
It’s a few hundred cheaper and I really like a pistol grip, so I can used the extra money to get a chassis.

Chop the Barrel down to 20 and recrown.

I have quite a few ELD-X and M 143 g, Rl 26 , so all I need is Brass and dies.

I think I could sell the other two, with dies and Components, should break even.

It sure would save me a lot of time as I find reloading for two, just to time consuming right now.

I’d say full power ahead Scotty, it’ll do all them tasks you speak of .. lol

Just reading the reloading manual that was at my elbow says the bottom of 6.5 PRC with 140gr is about 2800, but with much slower powders that the top end of 6.5CM with 140gr, which is around 2750. Reloader 26 is listed for both, but generally the 6.5 PRC uses a lot slower powders than the CM.

You'd have to swap the barrel, bolt face and get short magnum mags. 1 and 3 are easy but dunno if you get just get a magnum bolt/bolt head for for a short action 783?

Prob best and easiest to sell both rifles, get a Tikka (or custom) and drop it in a chassis.

Tikka has a lot to offer over a savage in the quality department. Easy worth 400 more IMO.
