would it be possible, and if so how much would it cost to convert a model 1895 marlin pistol grip from a 45/70 to a 348 ackley improved?
it would sport a:
24" barrel
peep sights
drilled and tapped for scope

convert to 348

Do a bit of measuring. I don't think the Marlin will handle the length of the 348 loaded cartridge through the feeding cycle. Maybe if mofified some what???

Lymans reloading handbook lists the .348 as 2.795 overall length and the .45-70 as 2.550 ol , thats .245 difference . NEARLY 1/4 INCH. Different bullet shapes may help with that length.

2.550" is the max case length for the .348 Win. (Same case as the AI.) It just happens to be the max OAL for a loaded .45-70 too. Stocker and Bearman pegged it. It's too long.

A good gunsmith can alter a Marlin 1895 to take cartridges about .150 longer,so unless you want to shorten your cases, it wont work . The .348 cases will shorten naturally when you fireform them to .348 ackley, but how much they will shorten, I don't know.

All of the 450 and 50 Alaskan are based on .348 cases, the cases shorten when necked up, and the .450 requires an ejector modification to work in the Marlin.

Keep in mind when you do get a Marlin custom barreled, it is more work than rebarreling say a Rem.700, so it will cost more in Labor.
