Converting an M305 to .7mm-08

I don't know how the feed ramp will handle a 308 sized case with a shoulder big enough to accommodate Pencil lead. ;)

Anyways in all seriousness thought it should work and its not much of a drop to go to the 7mm from the 308Win. Therefor I cannot see the problem.

You may have issues with the gas system, you can either get a adjustable gas system for the rifle or progressively work your way up with the barrel's gas port hole.

Hey, don't look at me... :rolleyes: I've never done this conversion or have any experience with other (than the .308 Winnie) calibers. I'm outta my experience set here!

There have been a couple of threads about getting and M1A in a cal other that .30, I myself would love one in 6.5-47Lapua. But before you can get this you need to find a barrel maker willing to do a lot of work. If I understand correctly after you get a bbl, it will need to be machined to look something like this..

Unless I missed something the only way you will get it to fit into the M14 platform is after considerable machining of a barrel blank.

It would be nice if one of the few Canadian bbl makers we have would consider this, but in reality it seems like a lot of work for a relatively small market.

I live in hope !
 
It does not NEED that profile, alot of it yes but not all of it. Could do it like SAI does it and just keep it cylindrical in that area with a large taper/chamfer area. Or even a medium weight barrel.

Not that its my call, but why may I ask do you want to convert it to 7mm-08? I would say just leave it alone, .308 is plenty good for paper or deer.
 
the gunsmith that works on my m305 has re barreled one of his m14s in 22-250. i didnt get into all the details, but he was telling me it wasnt that big of a job for him to do
 
.22-250 ? :eek: I want one! My #### might fall off if I don't get one in that little barn burner caliber! :D

Details? Sources for said barrel/countour?

ill ask the guy when i pick my m305 up from him the end of next month. hes a bit of a mad scientist , he does some really cool and really interesting stuff. im going to check into the availability of .22-250 ammo , if i can keep it fed i might give it a whack
 
There is no functional problem in converting
any of the M14 guns in any of these calibers:


22-250

243 Winchester

260 Remington

7-08 Remington

338 Federal

358 Winchester

450 Marlin



However, with some of the above chamberings,
the action will have a quite limited life expectancy.


Other 308 guns with stronger actions can handle other cartriges as well.

AR10 was tested with all of the above plus a sh!tload of others,
some of them I don't even know what they are
(6.5 Creedmoor, 338-7mm Benchrest, and all kind of other oddities).

FN FAL has been tested many years ago
with cartriges developed by FN Herstal.

G3 was tested with a large array experimental cartriges
developed by Norma and Lapua.

Humm, most of those rounds are well within the safe pressure limits for the M14. Both the M1 Garand and M14 series of rifles were designed to handle alot more pressure then the ammunition they are shooting. The M1 action to prove the design of it (which is shared with the M14) was tested to 120,000PSI and still managing to fire another 5,000 rounds of service ammunition safely.

Which of the rifles you mentioned have been subjected to that kind of proof testing?
