Is it feesible to convert a regular carry handle AR upper to a flat top? Who would do this work? Any idea on cost? Or is it just better to buy a flat top reciever?

Yes.

It would definitely be cheaper and faster to buy a new flat top and sell the A2 upper if you don't want to keep it.

(And no, I'm not trying to sell you one. ;) )

I've seen pictures of the odd bubba'd A2 with the carry handle chopped off and rail bolted on. Horrible. This shouldn't even be a consideration, get a flat-top upper.

It can be done by a good machinist who knows what he is doing.

I had a Colt upper that Colt themselves removed the carry handle and installed a rail in it's place. This was before mass production of flat top upper recievers.

The work was very nicely done. The fit, finish, and alignment of the screw holes was dead straight. The screws barely protruded into the reciever interior.

The only drawback was the rail was not Picatinney spec.I sold it off and bough a RRA A4 flat top reciever.

But it is less hassle and probably cheaper to buy a new stripped flat top upper and sell of the carry handle one.

Weren't the original flat top C7A1 uppers machined from C7 carry handle uppers? And pre-picatinny spec.

Sounds like an interesting rifle, I second GTs question!

Factory colt comes that way...interesting. What is the model number?

I have no idea. I bought the upper from a buddy, and I sold off the upper reciever months ago.

It was a 20" 1 in 7" twist HBAR barrelled upper.I know he picked it up quite a while ago and had it kicking around. He also knows his Colt stuff.......

If you ask Vondnik to do it, you'll get great results for sure, he machined parts for me before and he sure knows his stuff
