Hi all,
I've a Brno ZG47 in .30-06 lying unused for awhile and I want to keep & shoot this gun. Recently the 9.3X62 fever caught me up, now I want to convert it into 9.3X62.
Just wondering if it's possible to re-bore & re-chamber a .30-06 barrel to9.3X62 or should I go for a new barrel?
Are there any other modifications required, besides re-boring & re-chambering (or changing the barrel), like any changes to the bolt or magazine?
Which gunsmith would you guys suggest for this kind of job, I am in lower mainland BC.
Thanks

Last year I did exactly as you described to a .30-06 ZG-47. It was as simple as buying a 9.3 barrel blank and sending the barreled action and blank to Bill Leeper. Part of the job was for Bill to profile the new blank to the same profile as the original. I had him transfer the Brno sights to the new barrel and add a barrel band swivel mount.

I should point out that the Brno's barrel threads are metric.

Feeding, extraction and ejection on the unaltered action is perfect. No changes to the bolt.

That's exactly what I've in mind. If I have to buy a new barrel I'd keep the original profile of barrel & the sights. I may also put a barrel band like yours.
May I ask how much you paid for the whole job (Barrel blank & labour), you can PM me the total.

I did this to a Husqvarna 1600 that was in 270 . I got a new barrel for it .
but I wasn't expecting that 'd have to open up the feed rails on the action , and on my gun they where hardened ( a file wouldn't touch them ) .
I ended up wrapping emery cloth around the file and opening them up that way .

other than that it was fairly straight forward .

originally I was hesitant about the ability of the stock to take the abuse of the larger round , but several hundred rounds later it has help up very nicely .

if I was going to use a gunsmith , the first guy I would call is Dave Jennings , only because of previous positive experiences with him .

I had a pre-war model 70 rebored and rechambered to 9.3X62 by Les Bauska many years ago. The bore looked like a concrete sidewalk and the chamber was also badly pitted. The job cleaned up both the bore and the chamber, as the dimensions of the 9.3X62 chamber are greater all around than the 270 Winchester. The rifle has no feeding issues whatsoever, and it dropped right back in the original stock, of course. It is now with my son, and still hunting.

I spoke with Ron Smith, 403-631-2405, a few months ago, and he told he has gotten many requests for 9.3 barrels, and is seriously considering making this caliber. Give him a call.

I also spoke with Robert Jury recently, 403-302-3005. He already makes 9.3 cut-rifled barrels, and can rebore to that caliber. Give him a call.

There is also a fellow in Ontario, whose name I forget at the moment, who rebores. Someone here will surely know his name.

Can you give me the name of the fellow in Ontario that rebores?

I remembered his name this afternoon, Steve Holborn, and found this on Google:

Holborn Gunsmithing & Gun Mkr
1 RR Callander
Tel.: 705-967-0940
Mr. Steven Holborn Owner

I spoke with him by phone about five years ago, and he was reboring then. I have also read about a Ruger Safari Rifle that he rebored from 416 to 505 Gibbs with very satisfactory results. Just found one of the reports on line:

Steve has not been well enough to work for a couple years now. He has had a hip replacement and has other health concerns. Unfortunatly he will not be doing any re-bore jobs in the near future. It is unfortunant someone else doesn't take up re-boring barrels in Canada. There is likely a fair bit of work to be had.

That's sad. The very best gunsmiths in this country are over 60, and many are over 70. A dying art, left in the hands of a VERY BUSY few.
Yes, Ralf Martini and few others are the exception.

If Ron Smith does begin to make 9.3 barrels, that would be good news. When I ordered the barrels for my switch barrel, he didn't make a 9.3, so I went with the .375 bore and a Scoville chamber, which is a .375X62 rather than a .375-06.
