Converting Sako AV 30-06 to 300 H&H

Can it be done for a decent price? What all does it take to do it besides rechambering and bolt face opening?

Is your barrel at least 24 inches? If it is only 22 inches it will work better as a 30-06.

See if 300 H & H rounds fit in the magazine and will they feed up with the bolt... if they don't then magazine and rail alterations may be required. The barrel would require chambering and the bolt face open up and the extractor altered.

I think you are farther ahead to build on a magnum action rather than alter a standard action.

The barrel length is an issue, with a 22 inch barrel the .300 H&H doesn't signifigantly outperform a .30/06.

with 20% more case capacity, the H&H will most certainly outperfrom the 30-06 with identical barrel length, chamber pressure, and bullet weight.

I suppose you'll argue what defines 'significantly outperform', but 20% case capacity increase as a rule will provide 5% increase in MV.

most AV's in standard cartridges have 22-5/8" barrels,..and a lot of the magnums have the same barrel length........I'd sell it and find one in a magnum cartridge to rebarrel....or you may locate a 24" 30-06 Sako barrel from an L61R or an AIII...have it rechambered and your bolt face opened up, not sure if the '06 extractor will work though...you may have to swap it out, as long as the bolt is machined the same as the magnum bolt....
I'd ask a good smith with a lot of Sako experience about this rebarrel....

I didn't really want to argue at all. I just feel that a .300 H&H should have a 26 inch tube to utilize all that case capacity. I don't think I would go to the expense of a rechamber for a 5 % increase in muzzle velocity, just my opinion.
