So..This took me all day. What a chore. The AK Hand guards are an inch or more shorter than the CZ hand guards but I have always wanted a wood "dongy" as they are called. What I did was use the barf wood lower hand guard as a bracket and fitted the AK hg to fit. There was carving and sanding all over the place. The finished product holds well. It is isn't 100% free of play but it will definitely hold.

Here is my progression.

1. Carving and fitting to the barf wood

2. Cutting the grip shorter so that mag changes wouldn't be a problem

3. Staining the wood and I am currently painting the barf wood bracket black

In retrospect, there were a host of tools that could have made my life a lot easier. I could have saved hours with a chop saw, a routing bit and stain remover.

If I ever get the energy to do this again I would also try to fit the bracket to the back so that the grip would be an inch or more forward and I could try to retain the full length and still do mag changes. If there was someone skilled enough they could make a bracket out of metal but there would still be a lot of fitting needed for the hand guard.

Enjoy and keep modding!

Nice job. If you had two AK handguards you could split them in different places then join the halves to get the right length without needing brackets or beaver barf spacers.

Damm you should have told me before I came by today I would have brought all that for ya.
As for the metal bracket idea it would look right as it would probably interfere with the all wood look you got going on although I could show you how to do fake wood graining on the beaver barf that from a little way away you probably couldn't even tell.

:agree: totally!

Thats an excellent idea. I think I will do that. A little more expensive but it might finish a lot nicer. Here it is with the beaver barf painted and a second coat of stain and a different grip with a closer color match.

The black bracket really doesn't change things up because romy wood usually has a black finish at the end. The problem is the stability of it all. Right now it is two pieces and the hand guard can raise slightly in the bracket. As for the tools I am sure you have enough to make a whole rifle if you wanted. Thanks for the offer.

well, looks like I may have a couple of finished kits in a wekk or so, I hope. These were made by hand by me. I made some with more exotic wood and more basic.blonde wood is unfinished but I may just seal them and keep it that colour. Finished set in pics is a nice russian red.
