I just acquired an old, beat-up Cooey 64A without a mag. From old posts I see that the original was a F***ing plastic mag. I have a Remington Mohawk 10C with a plastic mag and I really hate it. Does the Cooey come with plastic and is there a conversion to metal?

If the mag housing is metal and totally encloses the mag it has been converted to the metal ( pot metal) mag. The back of the plastic mags slide up a spine of metal and were locked in place some how. A mag housing off of a model 64B will fit and conversions are around which will allow the Metal Cooey 64B, the Lakefield 64B, and now thw Savage 64 model, mags to fit( sometimes with a little filing because it is 3 different manufacturers and maybe 50 years of different products. Put a "WANT TO BUY" on the "equipment exchange" for a "COOEY MODEL 64B MAG HOUSING AND/OR MAGS IF POSSIBLE" see what happens. To replace you remove the stock then remove 3or4 screws substitute the new part and reassemble.

Thanks, Bearman. The mag housing is as you describe for a conversion to the metal magazine. I'll try one and let everyone know how it turns out. Maybe this old gun has been saved from a one-way trip to the ocean.

I have a Winchester 64 with the plastic mag as well. (Oddly I have a Remington Mohawk 10C as well. Creepy) The plastic didn't bother me until I notices it was starting to crack. It still feeds okay but I was hoping for a conversion of sorts.

Thanks BEARMAN

I just finished doing this. I had a real nice 64A but plastic mag had some feeding issues and was cracked so picked up a metal 64b mag housing and mag from another CGN'er here. Wasn't quite "drop in" due to the mag housing front lip being stopped by the barrel/receiver clamp. I just filed it off and it sits in nice. I still get a few jams but its better than before.
Tip: get some snap-caps and cycle them through to ensure good extraction and chambering before you actually fire it. I've had a couple out-of-chamber firings  due to extraction/feeding issue where the cartridge gets pinched sideways while chambering by the bolt and POW! A little scary.... Anyway else ever had that happen?
