Picked up a Cooey Model 82 at the local gun show in Florida today. Looks to be in very good condition. A couple of spots of minor surface rust, but no pitting. Wood is in excellant shape with a couple of minor handling dings. There is what appears to be a shell with a 67 on top of the chamber. The rear of the receiver has COOEY .22 CAL./ MODEL 82 in two lines on it. The pistol grip has a shell and a serial number stamped into it. I assume it is some kind if a military trainer, it just has that look to it. Full stocked, walnut oil finished wood, military style barrel bands and sling swivels and the front sight protected by ears. Any info will be appreciated and also a value. Paid $125 for it, the guy started at $200. Can't find a reference to it in any of my buying guides. Thanks.

I imagine that the "shell" mark you are referring to is a C /l\ property mark. That and the serial stamped in the stock indicate that yours was military issue, and not one of the ones sold commercially. These rifles were WW2 production, and purchased and used as training rifles. They were still being used for cadet drill into the 60s. Many were sold surplus by Century Arms years ago. Perhaps that is how yours got to Florida. Either that or a snowbird took it south. They generally shoot well, although the trigger pulls can be a bit heavy. There is a screw holding a filler piece at the rear of the receiver. A simple aperture sight fits there. I suppose with the open sight, a SMLE could be simulated; a No.4 with the peep.

Here"s a pic of what they look like with the peep sight. Cooey made34,810 under contract to the Canadian gov. Quantities were also made for the puplic. The ones that were sold to the public had no military marks as you described. If you find the book "COOEY FIREARMS MADE IN CANADA by John Belton it has a good story on this and all the firearms made by Cooey-----Cowboy
