Hey Gang!
I bought an old Cooey 64B last week for $75.
The old girl had a banged up stock that someone had refinished at one time, but didn't do a very good job.
The barrel also had most of the bluing wore off and it was getting pity in spots but the bore was still good and shiny.
I felt it still had some life left in it and decided to make it into a bush gun for my son.
Here's some pictures and the end results.

SANDING & STIPPLING THE STOCK (Thanks for the stippling idea Dr. Lector!)

I THEN PAINTED THE STOCK, SCOPE AND ALL METAL PARTS SEPARATELY IN SANDSTONE AND PUT THE GUN BACK TOGETHER.

I THEN DREW SOME PATTERNS ON A PIECE OF PAPER, CUT THEM OUT WITH AN X-ACTO KNIFE AND USED THEM TO SPRAY ON THE OTHER COLOURS (GREEN, BROWN & BLACK)

THEN I ADDED A CHEAP-O EBAY TRIPOD AND GAVE IT A SPRAY OF SATIN CLEAR COAT (CAME OUT TOO SHINY FOR MY LIKING BUT O-WELL)

I HAVE A CAMO SLING TO PUT ON YET, BUT I'M JUST WAITING TO GET SOME SWIVEL STUDS AND IT'S DONE. TOTAL COST FOR THE PROJECT - APPROX. $125
MY SON NOW HAS A SMILE FROM EAR TO EAR. :D ENJOY!

very nicely done! impressive looking! :D

quick question...do you re-blue or remove the bluing before you painted it? what kind of paint do you put on the muzzle, so that it doesn't wear badly?

I just puked a little. there was some nice grain in that wood. when I read the title I thought you were restoring a wonderfull little 22 from canadian hunting past.... not turning it into the wannabe mallninja monstrosity that it is.

poor old cooey :(

I am sure your son loves it and you did a good job! I have to agree with Amphibious though that it would have been a great little .22 if it was just refinished, blued, and with that bipod. But then that is just my opinion and it can always be redone in the future if your son wants a change! Thanks for the pics!

I rather like it - new life into an old girl...

Thanks everyone! I had fun doing it and my son is a happy little camper. (That's the most important thing in my world.) :D

Mr. Friendly,

I used 400 grit sandpaper & steel wool to remove what little bluing there was left on the barrel. In fact I brought it right down to the shiny metal. I then sprayed it with a self etching primer, flat black high temp BBQ paint and then the sandstone colour.
The paint that I used on the rifle was Krylon Camouflage paint from Crappy Tire.

Amphibious,
We all have our own opinions, but you know what they say about that!
You saw pictures. I saw the condition of the actual gun.
I'm a purist at heart too, but I know I made the right call....
BTW...I see you REALLY like to dive.
Have you read this???

so you say the same when someone takes a saw to a Enfeild?

ah, the bubba's come out and play :runaway:

He said it was dinged up and pitted to begin with. Now the metal and wood are protected so the rifle will still be servicable in a dozen years. He didn't cut 9 inches off the barrel or skeletonize the stock so as someone else already mentioned, it can all be sanded and reblued down the road. Not your cup of tea obviously, but definately not Bubba'd.

I just have a soft spot for those old guns.

I've read many articles about that, it's very old news. Kinetic gas laws are finite and DCS is easily avoidable if you follow them. I've been tested for PFO as well.

the uninformed shouldn't wrestle with a proffessional in their feild ;)

by the way, that write up is from 2001, in dive medicine, thats like dusting off a civil war bone saw ;)

;)

NeonBee, nicely done. Well, we can argue about finishing choices but hey - its just Cooey. About camo - be careful and don't lose this gun in the bush. they say there is a lot of guns in a bush, nicely painted in camo. You put it agains the tree as sit to stretch your legs and whoila! your gun blends in and you cannot find it.

Now bipod. Be particularly careful about how you hold your gun and do not apply any pressure, just rifle's own weight. Reason being is that Cooeys have rather weak barrel-receiver joiner and your POI will travel wildly from any difference in forward pressure, particularly if barrel-mounted bipod used.

Other than that - beautiful work.
