Cooey 39 buttplate

I want to refinish the stock of an old Cooey model 39 but I am somewhat puzzled by the metal buttplate which is installed on it.

Is that original or was it added later? It seems about 1/32th of an inch larger than the wood. If it's an addition, what would the original have looked like?

The wood has shrunk or bin sanded.
Remove the butt and chemicaly remove the finish on the stock.
Put the metal butt back awn and sand it down to the wood.
Take it off and remove the burrs.
Finish stock and re-install buttzs playt.

Yes it is original. A 60 year old wood stock will shrink. I sanded the sides down and refinished mine along with a other parts.
