Hey all. I’m experiencing an issue with my cooey 39. They extractor works fine when the bolt is in the safe position (half cocked I guess) but as soon as you fire it, it won’t hold onto the case until you pull the bolt back to safe again. Has anyone else experienced this issue or know how to fix it?

With bolt in fired position, the firing pin is protruding from bolt face; when you pull back to "half cocked", that withdraws the firing pin. So maybe your extractor claw is getting worn down, or more likely, you have gunk built up inside the claw surface that is preventing the claw from fully closing inward and grabbing the rim of the case. The protruding firing pin is enough to displace the rim from the claw. A place to start, anyways... BTW - I believe the 39 is one of the rimfire rifles that you do NOT want to dry fire - get some hollow wall fasteners or something to use - something to prevent firing pin tip from contacting the anvil on rear of chamber area.

Clean out any build up under the extractor and the tip of it may need sharpening... and look to see if the chamber edge is damaged from dry firing... that's a gunsmith fix..

You can do a credible cleaning job by soaking the entire bolt in penetrating oil, sometimes even just hosing it with blow tube through various gaps and holes - let it work for some hours, then blow out as best as possible with compressed air. Carb cleaner or similar works well for loosening or dissolving carbon build up - don't be surprised to see clumps of crap come flushing out of the bolt or extractor well. No real need to disassemble - just soak and blow it out well. I am not a fan of WD-40 for this purpose - although it might work - use a cleaner / solvent to dissolve the crap, then penetrating oil - blow out as much as possible and then try it.
