Cooey 600 Bolt / Action issue

My father passed away a couple years ago, and after helping mom clear out the old house we found his old 600.

Finally took it out with us to the range. Shot a couple of rounds and stopped using it after I noticed something.

It fires fine, loads well. The problem is that after every shot the bolt handle shifts upwards by about 15deg. None of my other Cooeys do this.

I am assuming, until I take the time to inspect the action, that the bolt handle and the receiver have a slight wear creating a small angle where they meet when closed. I'm suspecting that each shot causes the bolt handle to follow this very slight ramp where they meet and causes the bolt to start opening.

Would it be sufficient to file, or something else, the bolt handle or receiver opening slightly to try to remove this little ramp, or would it be better just to try to find a replacement bolt and fit it to the rifle.

Opinions / Procedures to correct ?

Don't try and fix something that isn't broke yet. The rifle fires okay, the bullet goes out the barrel, the gases don't come backward.

Will double check if I have a chance this weekend, but pretty sure m'ol 60, and repeater (same as a 60/600) both have the bolt handle jump a bit when fired.

As suggested already though, don't file anything just quite yet...make certain you have an actual problem before fixing anything. Cooey bolt handles are more than just for actuating the bolt, they are the locking component too.

Regardless of anything else do not remove any extra metal. The bolt is headspaced by the fit of the lever to the receiver. If it's peened or worn so badly that it does this just live with it. If it gets worse and starts just about kicking out of battery then what it needs is a little build up of the metal in terms of some TIG welded material that can then be dressed down to fix the issue while maintaining the headspacing fit.

thanks for your responses.

88man, This is what I was worried about and why I was asking.

Camster, none of my other 4 cooeys have movement on the bolt handle after a shot. This is why I am concerned about movement. Exactly because the bolt handle is the locking component that I worry.

BCRider, I think I will follow your opinion on this one. I want to allow my kids or others to use it without issue / surprises.

Kamlooky, Don't want to pass it to someone and forget to tell them to keep their thumb on the bolt handle.

This is / was dad's first gun so I will see what I can do to make it safe in my opinion and so I feel comfortable letting my kids use it.
