Cooey 64 Bolt picture ?

Not sure if you need a photo or and exploded view. Here is the exploded view from the owners manual along with Savage part numbers for the parts.

there's also a cil number- maybe - guess what? model 64-this thing has been manufactured by various firms since the 60's and goes by several firms, but always model 64, afaik

Same gun, I have used Savage parts in my Cooey 64b. Everything I've used from Savage has been exactly the same including the mags, firing pin and extractor.

You may have lucked out with the extractor...My original Cooeys have a "leaf" spring style extractor retained with a screw, newer models are a "solid" metal extractor with a spring under them, retained by a roll pin (which isn't really an improvement as I've seen quite a few instances of the roll pin working "down" and eating magazines)

Ejectors changed too, mine used to have a wire style, but I worked on my barrel to accept the flat-plate style.

I adore the 64's!

lol

I had just seen bolt pictures in the rimfire parts EE....

I don't think that pic will help, as it's your picture!

What angle, perspective, or view would you like? I should clean my 64 anyway...

Hey Camster,
Should have known you would have one !! If I could see a top, side and firing pin shot that would be great.
Ya the pics in the EE are mine.I took the Cooey bolts as part of a trade. Didn't want to but you know how it goes. I had 3 of them but there are 2 different styles. I just wondered if they would both work in any gun or they are specific to older or newer models ?

Here's a copy of the picture. Bolts # 5,6 and 7 are the ones I have. Here are the 2 different bolts closer. The firing pins and the pull handle holes are even in a different locations.

Thanks Scott...

Looking at your pics...I'm guessing (under line and bold guess) you have 2 64 bolts of different eras...

One of yours is identical to mine. (screwed in leaf-spring extractor)

The other is newer, with roll pin retained extractor. There's also a relief cut out of the bottom of the firing pin as pictured in the Savage diagram posted back on page one.

ADD-ON

The bolt handle not being in the same place helps confirm this too...my older 64 has a detent/relief that the charging get pressed into for "safe"...newer ones don't have that, but a safety incorporated into the trigger.

Thanks for the pictures. So it would depend on which model you have as to which bolt you need ?
That was a big help.And informative !!!

I'm not sure honestly...I sold off my newer Lakfield n' Savages so I can't cross refrence...It would depend on just how much different the charging handle's placement is. Even then, the rifle might function (with no safety on an oldie)...If you'll measure the distances of both of yours' from bolt face to charging handle you'll be able to tell. (I'll measure distance from "closed" bolt to the "safe" position)

On bolts in general...slapping a bolt in, and having it fit n' function (safely) is a rare thing. There are a few smiths n' parts vendors that won't sell just a bolt to a regular Joe like myself because of this...On the 64, it would be important to see if the cut-out in the bolt's top matched well with the barrel (on a 64 part of the barrel fits that cut-out). Same with the firing pin...

As often as folks type "check the headspace" in these forums, a bolt swap in any rifle should take this into consideration.

In my experience, all is not interchangeable. If you have a bolt that has the larger diameter handle pin, be wary of the bolt cracking where that hole is. I have seen 2 sizes of handle pins. The slot in the action that the bolt handle rides in is different in some models as well. In my working 64, I made it from several parts guns laying around, it was an early action, now sporting a later bolt. I had to machine the bolt groove longer and change where the safety catches were. I'm not sure how many variations there are, but I know there is a few. Rechambered and recrowned, it now shoots very tiny groups at 25.

Good to know !!
